I have the scratching noise that matches the heart beat .. It comes and goes and I can concentrate and block it out. However is this the beginning of bigger issues?

Not sure if thats Tinnitus, it normally tends to be a high pitched whistling noise.

Beat me to it SR, sounds more like blood pressure probs to me , but our resident Doctor Ethan will be along shortly , unless he's on strike.

BTW it takes ages to get an appointment these days , just as well you came here first :D

i would gladly swap with the op .
i have tinnitus 24 7 and it is a very high pitched noise ,not pleasant at all .
there isnt a lot that can be done for tinnitus.

I have Tinnitus and have done for about 12 years absolutely drives me nuts at times.

No cure according to the website and people have killed themselves over Tinnitus so hopefully yours is not.

I suffer from mild tinnitus due to bad ear protection while gigging. It sometimes flares up but that's usually when my ear is clogged with wax. Went to the doctor and he didn't really seem that bothered, I really do need to get a second opinion.

There is a form of tinnitus that is rhythmic to the heartbeat - called pulsatile tinnitus (iirc). It's possible that it's related to blood vessels near the ear, but as with all tinnitus - maybe it's not.

Hateful condition. I've had it for a few years now (the constant high-pitched variety). Unfortunately the only advice for coping that I can make is to ignore it. I know that sounds a bit crass, but it's always worse once you notice it and think about it.

Thanks for the replies, those of you guys suffering did it come on slowly or not?

Mine happened quickly, I thought at first it was a nearby phone mast that was causing it. But turns out it was 40 years of gigging in front of bass speakers .

Seemingly there is a device you can wear on the ear to mask the tinnitus ringing sound. I don't know if it works or not , best of luck .

I think mine came on fairly slowly. I say "I think" cos I can't remember when it started anymore - it was a long time ago. I noticed it occasionally at first, and then it was probably a couple of years later that I noticed that it didn't really go away anymore.

Now it's almost always there but the perceived volume does change dramatically. And, as I mentioned it's always worse when I think about it.

Its just like a hearing aid that emits white noise. You can get much the same thing by tuning a personal stereo/radio in between stations and listening to the hiss.

How true is that!

Yeah suffer from it all the time, but ignore it most of the time and block it out. High pitch noise, cant remember when it started just remember always having it and didn't realise everybody doesn't have it until talking to my wife about it years ago:confused:

I've also had it many years. It sort of crept up on me. Some days if there is a lot of background noise (e.g at work) I don't notice it for hours. When it's quiet though it can be really intrusive and sometimes it's so loud it wakes me up at night and I can't get back to sleep. I'd love to know what peace and quiet sounds like.

A good friend of mine at the club who didn't appear to be unhealthy, went to sleep on Monday and didn't wake up Tuesday morning. That's peace and quiet.

Whatever problems I/you/we may have, be thankful when you wake up on the right side of the turf.

(Not having a go at you or anyone else Mashie - just feeling a tad sad and vulnerable at the moment)

Had tinnitus for years, didn't realize what it was at first, thought I was hearing the frequency noise from the computer screens that I was repairing. It's a constant high pitched whistle and doesn't go away at all. I can forget about it and not hear it, until I think about it sometimes (like now), then I can't not hear it. Some days are worse than others, where it can get really loud. One suggestion for dealing with it is to play music to negate the pitch, i found this to work on occasion but not always.

Interestingly, this pooped up on the top of my google search just now http://www.tinnitus-study.info/uk-home?gclid=COuLuc60wswCFS8z0wod8mgEyA I don't fit the profile for the trial, but you may?

Just read another site that suggest bad circulation is to blame, something I also have a problem with, don't know how scientifically true that is.

The main symptoms of Tinnitus include noise in the era, ringing, buzzing etc. The condition is merely an annoyance. As I have been through it and experienced it, it is very important to look at the condition from a broad perspective. Seeking medical advice and taking a complete audiological evaluation by a qualified ear specialist will be the right way to deal this condition.
