I took the game up in 2008 and joined my first and only club - South Herefordshire Golf Club in 2009.
I was given a set of clubs and bought myself a ping zing putter new. Since then I have upgraded my kit but always second hand and have never been fitted. I've taken a methodical approach and felt for me it was more about learning the game before splashing the cash on custom fit. I was cut in the annual review from 9.8 to 8.8 so decided to treat myself and went for the custom built Tom Wishon putter. Putting was by far the worst part of my game and I am very happy with the new putter.

So to my questions for you all. Now I've proved I can play to my single figure handicap following a recent cut from 9.0 - 8.4 shall I splash the cash and replace the 2009 Taylormade Burner Driver in the hope of gaining extra yardage with all this new technology I hear about? (therefor leaving shorter 2nd shots) If so any recommendations? I've thought about Tom Wishon again but that is going to be expensive.......In the region of £270 - £340 plus a fitting charge of £75

Thanks in advance:thup:

As per homers question what is it your after, and more importLy if you know why not plump for a high spec used model

910's, r11's for example can be picked up for pennies.... With very high spec shafts used ;)

I don't understand all the techy stuff........ that's what I'm hoping for on here and suggestions of what to consider...... I love a bargain. I do have some cash on my account at the club so may consider a new 3 wood after the driver is sorted..

Well all I can suggest is try a SLDR - I gained 20 yards with one

But there are so many choices out there I would also give the Big Bertha , I25 and Cobra a try

There's so many it hard to know where to start, I'd just keep trying different stuff at the range until you found something that clicks for you.

Fwiw , I come from an 09 burner 9.5 stiff to my current amp after a custom fit although it has be subject to an upgrade shaft in the process. I come away from the burner as it launched too high and ballooned in the wind, great driver though!

After trying the r11s, rbz, i20, virus pro limited and the amp.... The amp won but it was close between the i20. I'd go for something with removable shafts as the older model shafts come up for pennies on the bay and you can tinker once you have a head you like,

I'd suggest you stay with the Burner until you feel you are not making progress - and use a reducing handicap to measure that.

So keep it for the time being. Meanwhile, try a few of the newer models in preparation for price reductions in the near future.

Btw That Burner was one of their best apparently - even my shape (fairly deep-faced), but I'd given up on TM by then!

I remember you had really good gains on the monitor, have you found it has translated to the course?

Most certainly have mate - maybe just need a bit more consistent with it but that's improving every round as I get used to it

That's good. I've heard a lot of good things about the SLDR. My mate has just bought one of the white ones after a fitting at precision golf. I typically haven't been interested in TM gear but I'll take a good look at my bud's new driver when I play with him next.

My R11 was the best driver I h ave had and this has a similar feel when hitting it

I have the Wishon 919 driver 11* and 44" with the Wishon Black S2S 72g shaft. Been playing it for the last year and I've not lost any distance and gained more accuracy due to more on centre hits. You only get what you pay for, and if you went with the OEMs you'll most likely end up with a driver of over 45" and a lightweight shaft to get you those yards but shot dispersion will be the killer for you.

At Callaways Kings of Distance I gained 30 yards with both the Big Bertha and X2 hot drivers over my Ping G15 and the dispersion didn't change!

All the big names come with good tech. Whatever you choose, get it custom fitted and use an after market shaft.

That is my learning and 2c
