There's probably a simple rule on this somewhere in the book, but I haven't had a chance to dig it out, so hopefully someone has it stored away for such an occasion!

A player's first ball and their provisional fly into the trees in very similar spots.

Is there anything stopping the player saying they are looking for the provisional first? (i.e. during the first five minutes of the search). It seems to me if this were legal, you'd be effectively giving yourself 10 minutes to find the ball you really wanted to find.

Have a look at this decision:

[h=2]27/4[/h][h=4]Time Permitted for Search for Original Ball and Provisional Ball[/h]Q.Is a player allowed five minutes to search for his original ball and five more minutes to search for his provisional ball, or just a total of five minutes?
A.If the two balls are so close together that, in effect, both balls would be searched for simultaneously, a total of five minutes for search is allowed. Otherwise, the player is allowed to search five minutes for each ball.

if theyre in approx the same area then you just get 5 mins for both balls, they have to be in clearly different areas to get a separate 5 mins for each (someone will be along to post specific ruling soon hopefully)

Have a look at this decision:

27/4

Time Permitted for Search for Original Ball and Provisional Ball

Knew it would be in there somewhere!

Seem to remember a commentator (possibly Faldo but couldn't say for certain) saying in that situation he would look for his provisional first for just that reason!

That's a bit daft, don't you think? If you are searching in the same area for two balls, how can you say you are looking for one rather than the other? That's the point of the Decision.

sounds like a commentator who didnt know the rules or common sense

Its always fun on the rules forum to read the OP and see what I'd have said before Colin & the Gang come along with the answer

Happy to say I got this one spot on (though I couldn't have quoted the decision number)

Sorry Rulefan, 'Colin & the Gang' just sounds better than 'Rulefan & the Gang'
