Time For The "Summer" Putter Yet!?

I don't know about the rest of you but I prefer to use a heavier 2 ball blade putter during the winter months and periods of hollow tyning. However, now that our greens are begining to show signs of recovery (after a fairly wet winter), becoming a bit quicker and truer, I'm tempted to switch over to my prefered "Summer" putter this weekend - either my Scotty Cameron Newport 2 or old Ping Answer. Both these putters offer much better feedback and touch on quicker greens.

Does anyone else use a heavier mallet style putter during the winter months and a different putter during the summer? And, is it time to switch over or am I a little premature!? :D

I only started playing at the beginning of last winter so cant really comment but can see where you coming from. Bit heavier to stop coming up short on the slow greens.

Hear alot of people talking about this on here. Think only you can decide if its the right time though as we dont know how quick (or slow) your greens are at the moment. If you keep putting it well past the hole then maybe its time to switch.

Definitely not the time for a "summer" putter yet, well certainly not up here in the frozen wastes of West Yorkshire. I played in a comp last Saturday in decent dry conditions and the lightweight soft faced putter I had on board just would not get the ball to the hole. This resulted in an outbreak of the three putts and a severe staring at from my partner. So it,s back to the heavy mallet type for me until the greens speed up a little.

I could almost justify carrying 2 putters - the 2 ball blade for the longer putts that require a heavier strike and the traditional style blade for putts inside 10ft!

This might sound daft / unorthodox but i'm sure I've heard of a couple of tour pro's recently who have taken to carrying 2 putters!?

I have definitely seen a pro doing it before because they made a big point of it on golf night. It may be worth giving carrying two putters ago if there is a club in your bag currently that is rarely used. Give it a go and see what happens.

An extra thought...it could make your putting go a bit wayward as one minute your using one weight the next another, so you may find yourself naturally trying to compensate for this resulting in dodgey distance control. Never tried it myself though so am not sure.

I'm on my summer putter already, changed with the clocks, as per usual. Hit a couple short today, but hey-ho, that's the swings and roundabouts.

Use the one putter all year round-our greens are USPGA sand based and are in great condition even in the middle of winter-they ar a tad slower than in summer-so no need to have a "Winter" and "Summer" Putter.

As i ahve said a few times before just practice distance control drills! Save you some money!
