I think the continual coverage of a tiger slashing at the ball and playing crap is getting out of hand. Quite a few players were out there putting good scores together and yet, after going well below the cut line, it’s Tiger Tiger Tiger.

I would like to see the guy back to his best, but the US coverage is truly OTT and I just wonder where this is going.

I would genuinely rather watch Tiger hooking the ball into the trees and missing a 5 footer than watch Keegan Bradley puring one 290 down the middle and holing a ten footer... And I really don't undertstand why anyone would rather the other way around.....

And I'm more of a Phil guy!!

For me watching golf is all about the story, not about the actual golf shots. Do I want to watch D.A. Points shoot a 67? No. Because I know that any pro on the PGA tour can shoot a 67 when they play well, and because I have no clue what D.A. Points looks like. I would much rather see how Tiger does on his return from injury, or how well Darren Clarke plays with a hangover or if Rory McIlroy can handle his new found hugely over-ratedness.

There are very rare occasions when the shots themselves are enough to be entertaining (hole in ones, holes bunker shots, ridiculously long putts) but the problem with them is that as soon as you see Brendan Steele at +4 pop up on you screen lining up a 100 footer, you know it's gonna drop!

But anyways until the real story begins on Sunday I know I would much rather watch Tiger running after a 3 wood he's hacked out of the rough, wielding his club like some sort of samurai ninja on steroids, than I would watch Scott Verplank smooth a 4 iron from the fairway to the middle of the green and then tip his hat to his crowd of 3 spectators (who are actually just getting a good spot for when Tiger passes through anyways...)

Fair point, but how far do we go with the Tiger demise. Tiger for 36 holes is not going to keep you happy over the weekend and last nights round was about getting into the weekend, but it was more about one man who was clearly not getting in.

The problem is we are subject to US TV coverage and Sky are still reliant on the pictures the host broadcaster give them to commentate over. Sadly the Woods story seems to be big news still, especially with the comeback, split from Williams and continuing demise in the world rankings.

There isn't a lot that can be done to prevent this and its fundamentally the way the US present their sport, focussing on the "names" and a story rather than showing the event in a wider context. Until Woods returns to form or has another break it will ever be thus. I don't mind watching a former #1 have a hack (in his terms anyway) as it provides a certain feeling that at last he has come down to ur level (in relative terms of course) and I find it funny watching his expression as another Nike ball goes for a swim.

We are always going to have a US bias in the coverage anyway and so will always get picture of Joe Mcnobody from Illinois hitting a decent but not great 4 iron into a green especially if he's within 100 places of the lead (ok a slight exaggeration). Any coverage is better than no coverage and the plus side is with Tiger out we might get a better weekend of more general focus on play

Was watching last night and whilst they showed a lot of Tiger and a fair bit of Davis Love III you'd have struggled to work out that Paddy H was also in that group. Think they only showed him hitting a couple of shots towards the end. As as he shot 69 I guess he wasn't playing badly and I would have liked to have seen a bit more of his play. Luke got a fair bit of coverage for a change - mostly great irons followed by putts just slipping past the hole. Overall though I felt the coverage wasn't too bad.

As for Tiger I fully understand why they show him even when he's playing badly. It is interesting to see such a great player struggle but he also hit some great shots and it's part of the story of the Tournament.

Generally I think golf coverage on a Friday, especially in a Major, has quite a difficult job to try to balance what's happening to the big names, getting in a few old favourites before they depart, following the guys who are on the cut line where the pressure is and showing the guys who are playing well some of whom may not be very well known. Not always easy.

Excellent post and well written

Didn't he use to be a golfer?

I'm pretty sure he was World Number One for a while and that you saw every arse-scratch he ever made, but my mind must be playing tricks because we barely saw a shot of the current World Number One...

I must have missed your post complaining about the amount of coverage that was given to McIlroy :p

Unless of course you are happy watching someone stand with ice on his wrist or being bandaged up or even chatting to the physio while there are loads of other players out on the course playing good and bad golf

Or is that OK because he is British

Love him or loathe him, Tiger is still the biggest draw in golf and will dominate the TV coverage whether he playing well or struggling

It just makes me want to sitch off. I was sick of watching McIlroy on thursday night, "MILKING IT" is the phrase I would use. The coverage is just not enjoyable anymore.
I was surprised yesterday that he didnt have a LOGO splashed all over his bandage.........
Thankfully I shall be having a few Guninness tonight to care about it

The last bit of my post was...I wonder where this is going.

There has got to come a point where the Tiger thing stops and as long as you are enjoying poor golf then fine. I cant think of any other golfer who gets air time while playing total crap.

One of the commentators said last night "Tigers still the biggest draw in golf",and i totally agree watching Tiger hack it round is better than watching someone ive never heard of.
People love stories and Tigers demmise is the biggest story.
It was great last night listening to that miserable sod Monty slating Tiger at every opportunity, who does he think he is.
At the end of the day Tiger has a chance of coming back,Monty has not.

Just what i was thinking at the time.

If that's the case, then I suggest the broadcasters do a split screen type thing, where main golf is broadcasted with a small tv pop out showing Rory bending his wrist back 4000 times.... :D

You'll see more of them tonight.

Unless.........

They show us what Tiger did last year?

They probably will as well.
Tommo your right about us never learning about new players but players have to earn there stripes first.
Tv companies and advertising companies lose big revenues if people switch off.

You could well be right and if thats the case there will be one big switch off this weekend. TV companies dont need to find some new blood, it's there, if they want to show us.
