My other half and I have been avid theatre goers since back in the day when we saw the original Evita production about 1977. Now with 2 grandchildren we'd love to take them to see some shows. So, after receiving an email from Ticketmaster I checked for 4 tickets in September for the Lion King, when they were kindly offering 'no booking fees'

4 seat in the stalls about half way back - over £600 !!!!

No reductions anymore for children. Add train fares and food etc a trip to the theatre around £750

Absolutely can't happen and a whole generation of potential theatre goers potentially lost forever.

Any views?

With your money you could buy the theatre mate 😁😁😁😁

Not sure where you are going. We go to the Mayflower Southampton, Saw Lion King with the wife. Tickets £30 each. Was excellent.

I’ve been a few times. Decent prices can be sourced with some flexibility although I appreciate that’s not always possible.

Re the generations missing out, when I grew up, the theatre had the image as being something for the “haves” not the rest of us so in that sense it hasn’t really changed.

We have been to the Lion King and a few others and certainly never paid that much

The Mrs & son have been to a few,Lion king,Shrek,Cats...
never paid anywhere close to that mate.
Might be worth searching other sites.

The theatre is expensive, it just is. Shows cost a lot to put on and those costs have to be passed on. There are lots of good shows that come to Newcastle but we pass on them mostly because we can't justify the cost. It's a shame but as someone has already said, it has always been that way.

For that money, have you thought about watching it on Broadway?

If you are flexible on what to see you can have massive bargains on the day just by going to the half-price shops all over town. And you get to see some things you didn't originally plan to see, but that are probably still worth it.

A few years ago a friend and I ended up seeing LesMis as Phantom wasn't available. Still think it is the best you can see in the West End. And in New York I ended up seeing once. For a handful of dollars I got a 2nd row seat, I was basically on stage.

If you are set on one thing and book in advance it is going to be expensive, nothing you can do. And some shows are so in demand they never go into those half price shops.

Look for seats in the stalls, London Theatre direct L26 seat £155.50 Matinee 22nd Sept

Lyceum September23 seat n21 £102.50 matinee

Yes there are cheaper seats in the Gods where HID can't sit as she has vertigo but when I posted I looked for 4 seats in a decent part if the stalls

If its just the two of you, in town, and looking to book something and you have an open mind about what you can get tickets for... There's bargains to be had... Anything other than that and it's just got too expensive for 'regular' folk... Even attending provincial theatres can get pricey...

I've done a huge number of shows mainly in London and travelling shows nearer in Kent and we do regularly pick up cheap tickets through deals and on the day. Sadly, we can't take a 5 and 6 year old to London in the hope of finding cheap tickets on the day and get decent seats

Thing is for lion king half way back in the stalls is absolutely grade A prime position due to the animals and cast walking up and down the aisles..... Also is that a weekend matinee performance or indeed before the schools go back? All of the affects the prices.

I've been umpteen times to many a show and I reckon most I've ever paid was £70 for damn good tickets.....

The tickets I looked for were mid September following an email from Ticketmaster advertising no booking fees. I agree the tickets I looked for were good seats, which I have usually purchased for my wife and I to see London shows.

Even at £70 per ticket, a day at the theatre for two adults and two young children plus train fares and food will be around £400 for a day out.

This is true - it's where we sat when we went a few years back - didn't seem quite this pricey. V V G though.

Yeah completely agree, it's often (price wise) good to find those show and dinner deals.... Ok the seats may not be the best in the world but are good value.

Last year I got lulled into buying tickets in the "kids go free" period ...they just ramped up the adult ticket prices to compensate.

Good luck in your search.

I guess you are trying for one of the most popular shows in town, and looking at prime seats. But even so, I'm rather surprised at the price. At that rate it's comparable to the Royal Opera - which is generally regarded as the most expensive "venue" in town. Unfortunate for you that the slightly cheaper seats (and that's only relative) don't suit your needs.
