Hi all,

It is very rare that a driver comes out that really catches my eye, when it happens its usually a Titleist or something like the Ping Anser. With that being said the Callaway Big Bertha has grabbed my attention this year but I have not herd much noise about it here on the forum.

To look at its not boastful, colourful or ridiculousness. The adjustment seems low key although there is plenty of it.

I shall not be buying one, I am were I am with equipment but if I were in the market I would be trying this bad boy out.

What are you guys thinking, Callaway get less and less of forum air time in the last few years, is this a possible hit? Anyone tried it? There are two iterations right? Whats the difference?

Thanks all

Alex

I have no idea about the driver but I'm looking forward to trying the Fairway woods when they come out (I won't buy one though until they drop under £100)

I am in the market for a new driver and I may well try the BB out. Come to think of it I still have the orignal Great BB in the garage from about 20 yrs ago!

However, I cannot see myself spending £400 or so on a club so may try it then wait a bit for the prices to drop.:(

Nice looking crown, no go faster stripes or garish colours.

I for one would love to try it , having the xhots and impressed with them , would like to see the latest driver Callaway come out with.
It is not due out till the 14th February , so a little wait, the only trouble i can see is the price which i believe will be £399

Have a look at Mark Crossfield's you tube channel as he reviewed them both the other day.

Can't quite remember what the differences were, one seemed very complicated with regards to the adjustability as you could drop in weights into the head one way or the other, adjust this and that. I may even go as far as saying if TM would have done it they would be getting dogs abuse, but no doubt Callaway are just innovating ;)

Ahh Doh, I did not know it was not out yet, hence the low key response... And ye, maybe Callaway get less love these days as £400 is a massive ask!

Surely 400 notes is the RRP, and the actual price on web sites and the such like will be something like £325. But then again that is still a fair whack for a club that will more than likely be superseded within a year.

Ye I am sure your right, and the Titleist 913 was about £325 when it first hit the shops...

It would seem its meant to be an everymans club.

I did see Mr Crossfields review on one of them but not the one with the sole weight. I shall take a gander this evening.

I am not so interested, the last few callaway offerings have not fitted my requirements, plus I got a new driver mid season last year so I will work with that until it develops a hole in the face or shaft :).
Alex I would give it a tonk if I were you, your present one is battered!

I really like the alpha version has a great look to it. Not liking the other big bertha dont like the look of it really. Id be interested when they come down in price but I wouldnt buy one when they first come out.

Just watched the alpha video, he only sees 1-200rpm of spin and the launch angle changes 0.5 degree... Not really enough of a change, good idea but the face needs to be deeper and this thing needs to be nearer the face or at an angle of 45 degrees ( now that would do something!)

I thought the same. The variation was so small, it could easily have been accounted for by variation in the small sample size of shots.

It is an interesting concept though.

I haven't been a fan of Callaway stuff generally, but I think they've really upped their game in the last couple of years. They have aped the TM business model though - lots of gimmicks, distance distance distance and short release cycles. Which I'm not so keen on.
I get the impression their products are really up there with the best now. I tested and nearly bought a razr fit extreme last year, very nice driver.
I like some of their recent irons too.

In theory the idea sounds like a perfect way to make one club suitable for all level of golfers and can even change as your skill level improves or deteriorates.

It would be good to see what actual difference the flippable sole weight has on a robotic test

I have been a big fan of Callaway woods and hybrids until as Stuey said they started releasing too much too quickly with too many gimmicks.

I'm not a big fan of clubs with movable parts, my swing already has enough of those, but I like the look of the Alpha and in a couple of years time maybe I might get one when they are £79.99 ;):D

Those waiting for a price drop may be unlucky as there are reports that the price will remain for it's lifetime and Callaway will not reduce its price at all during this time.

Whether that actually happens remains to be seen, and having see the price drops on the xhot range I'd be amazed if they managed it.

I had a BB in the past and a lovely club it was too. Even had the short lived Hyper X. I have been a big fan of the Callaway irons in the last two or three years having had the X-14many moons ago which I loved but the driver offering have left me cold. I'm afraid the latest BB's don't buck that trend. I couldn't justify £400 for a single club. You can get some decent irons for that
