Don’t get me wrong. I love to see the youngsters out on the course; its great for golf. But do I want to see them take all the prize money every week? I think not!

I write to debate whether the juniors should be able to enter the Gentlemens competitions? Our club allows any junior of any handicap to enter all medal and Stableford competitions. They can’t enter trophy comps though. We have one aspiring 13 year old who started this year playing off 27 and has dropped to 18 in just one season. Along the way he has won at least two medal rounds and earned himself over £300. Not bad when they only pay subs of £40. I wouldn't mind but they have loads of their own comps going on, and I can’t enter them unless I’m under 16.

My argument is that they should have to reach a certain level before they should be allowed entry with the big boys. Lets say they need to have a handicap of 11 first. Then if he drops 9 shots in a season he deserves all he gets. But at that age they would expect to improve considerably as they get stronger and their temperament matures. And it would appear OK that they do it to the detriment of the gentlemen and seniors around them.

Any thoughts.

Agree they should be of a certain standard at our club it's 18 handicap and they can't be grouped together has to be at least one full member with them.

I just love old fuddy duddies like you. So I see you were born playing of 9, at the age of 18. What I mean is, where you ever a JUNIOR? did you ever play off a handicap higher than 9?
I hope the juniors your talking about know the difference in spelling ONE and WON!

I take it you dont have children?

I wont go on as Brendy will be out with his big stick

get a life man!!!!!!!

I hate so called golfers who cant stand juniors on the course.
THEY have to learn somewhere.

Whould you rather them out robbing OAP's?

I think you need to read my post again. I love to see them out there - my question is should they be taking all the 'adult' prize money before they have reached a 'level'.

I will say that no I was never a junior, I'm not fuddie duddie, and no i didn't always play off 9. I started off 18 a few years ago. And I do have a life thanks!

Why are some people so argumentative. I am only raising a point?

Im failing to see the point of the thread is it you don't like juniors because they beat you or that as they get older and stronger they improve ?

I will continue to defend my theory. And I have nothing against the junior game. I'm a strong believer. But as a youngster matures and gets stronger he or she is likely to improve quite rapidly. My query is they then enter the comps playing off what is an ever reducing handicap and take the winnings. Personally I don't think this is right and fair. But its my opinion. My post and poll was to see if others feel the same way.

Maybe they should be allowed to play with us but rather like amateur status, not allowed to take the prizes?

Come on it's hardly the crown jewels you're playing for is it??

What is top prize for your medal?? £40???

Give the kids a break, this early success and the prizes they have won may be just the encouragment they need to stay with golf once the discover that the thing down the front of their Y fronts has alternative uses!! :D

Thats irony right there Ian (would) haha. :D
I think juniors should have their own competitions until the age of 16 or 17 then they can muck in with the regular members (remember they dont pay as much in fees either), handicap limits couldnt be imposed as that is just unfair, why should an adult 28 handicapper be allowed yet a 15 handicap junior etc.

Each win was about £120. these were both no division medal rounds, part of our summer series medals. The overall winner has best 4 from 8 rounds. This is considerable cash for a junior who will only pay £40 per year for unlimited golf.

Well said.

So it's the fact that they beat you, you can't stand. What I say to you then is, try harder to beat them.
Lets hear it for the junior's...........

As said before by clubchamp this bugs me rotten juniors have to start some place .At my club if they are good enough they can enter the comps and sweeps but are not allowed to win any money and if sponsered by a drinks company(Magners or Bellhaven) they are not allowed to enter as are not 18.
Last year our club champ was a junior and he won the junior won as well this is the first time its happened in nearly 200 years so good luck i say, he's now away to the USA on a scholarship.

We let them play in the mens comps - but not Saturday (mens main day) They can play opens, sundays and the rest of the comps no problem as long as they have a hc of <28. There is also a lot of jnr comps - but CSS can get down to 67 (sss70) so getting cut while playing with a feld of improvers is the problem IMHO.

Yea its annoying seeing them lift a lot of prizes, but then again one of the lads started at ~14 and got to 4 so I would expect a few prises if I done that myself. I expect if it was me droping like that someone would get annoyed with me winning everything even if I did put in a LOT of hard work.

I see where you are coming from in saying he only pays £40 a year but he will pay the same fee as you would to enter the competition. The prize fund should come from the entry fees from all of the days competitors. I think he should be allowed to win the money being as he has paid to enter so good luck to him.
We have a 12 year old who plays off 11, he won 4 major competitions this year winning around £500 in the process.

The juniors must play and have no restriction. They must play on a level playing field with the adults, and learn etiqute from the older members. Do adult members have to reach a certain standard before they are deemed fit to play in a competition? I'm sorry Sandy, but you can't be 'all in favour of the junior game' and impose draconian rules just because they don't pay enough subs money. One suspects that as a percentage of their annual income, these juniors pay more than their fair share. Sour grapes, pure and simple. And yes, I had to deal with this kind of discrimination at my golf club when I was a wee lad, luckily it was the view of the minority.

This is my point exactly. They can't win the money. At my club they walk away with wedges of cash as they improve. I think I will sponsor one of my daughters and manage her through to win some of my entries fees back. Or maybe i can be her caddie and take my 20% cut of winnings. I would still be quids in!!
