Anyone played Thorpeness golf course? Any advice / comments?

have a stay and play there in April

Great place, some nice holes in a great location.

My advice:

1. Leave your driver/ego in the bag, it will only put you into the gorse.
2. Don't over do it on the Broadside...!

Good course and always dry. We play it every March on a stay and play and it's always in good condition. Like above driver is not needed on a lot of holes and the course doesn't play as long as the scorecard suggests as the ball runs nicely.

Excellent, must be decent to keep going back 😀

I'm a points member there. It's a great course, always in good condition. We play it about once per month. The hotel rooms are a little 'tired' and could do with some refurbishment.

Very nice track in good condition and I agree, don't automatically reach for the driver.

BUT whenever I have played there pace of play is slow due to only 8 minute intervals.

Also hotel is overpriced for what it is and, as has already been said, a little jaded.

Shame about the hotel but I am pleased you've mentioned it , I had looked at stopping there for our trip over to Purdis Heath and playing the course as well.

Thanks all

definately seems like a course for being straight then. Not too fussed about hotel as golf priority. Although seems like it could be a long day

I've shot my handicap a couple of times at Thorpeness by pulling driver and barely hitting any fairways. I don't think it's too unforgiving. Some holes you'll need to pull a shorter club (1st, 3rd for example) but others, it's more fun to just pull driver and give it a whack (6th for example, just whack it at the post and let it run down the hill towards the green). Certain holes you could end up in the heather, but I didn't seem to struggle from the rough, and like I said, shot my handicap both times I've played there whilst driving poorly. You'll enjoy it, it's a lovely course.

Haven't been there for a good few years and need to go back. Used to do a very mixed ability tour there & the consensus was that it wasn't overly harsh on the higher handicapper but still presented a good challenge to the lower handicapper.

There are holes where you are better off leaving the driver in the bag, but there are equally holes which demand a good drive; 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 13th, 14th, 15th & 18th in my opinion.

I judge a course on the basis of if it was the only course I could play for the rest of my life, would I still be happy to play golf, and I'd be very happy with that course.

Ahhh Thorpeness.....a course I've never had much love for, despite it being a reasonable track and always playable.

The last time I played it I shot 24 points on the back nine off my 8 handicap. Somehow I had contrived to only score 1 point on the front nine!!!

Yup, it's one I have a love/hate relationship with. Of all the courses I play fairly regularly, I still find it one of the most challenging off the tee. Your lucky if you find the heather, it's the gorse that is the killer. Once your ball is in there that's it. You can hit good drives 5 yards off line and it's a lost ball.

Still enjoy playing it as it's a great challenge, and for anyone low/mid handicapper, the first 3 holes are tough.

We have our Annual Swindle trip there, over three days 90+ points will normally be in with a shout.

Great course, usually in great nick.
