Anyone ever played at Thorpe Wood GC near Peterborough?

Playing in a foursomes club match there in a couple of weeks, any hints/tips/info appreciated

Thanks in advance

Yeah great little course. Some tight holes, few dog legs and a few long ones. Nothing too tricky though.

I've never played it but hear good things about it - long course I think though. Perhaps we should arrange a mini meet :-)

Fantastic course for a muni. Top notch golf range, American golf shop on site, with 1st class staff (I got fitted for all my mizzy stuff by them last year) as has been said the greens can be a bit slow, really slow if we have had rain. Normally in great condition, just avoid on a hot day at the weekend, unless you have a spare 5 hours.

One of my close friends owns and runs the course, best muni I have played. The greens are a little slow but that's because of the amount of traffic the course sees, it is in very good condition, although the rain has slowed it a little recently.

If you are playing off the whites, although longer, it plays easier in my opinion and is a good test.

The course I played my first 18 holes at, and was a member at twice. As has been said due to traffic the greens and fairways are often typically a little longer than you might expect on other courses. Some of the bunkers maybe a little low on sand but is a real solid course IMO. Not tricked up, no internal OOB. Was over 7K yards off the whites before it was fashionable to lengthen courses.
I've not played since they put in the driving range (& AG) where I think they reduced the 14th to a par 3.

As per above as off the yellows two of the 5s become 4s so the whites do not always seem harder.

The first 6 holes have trouble on the right (some closer than others). Always wondered if those were the 6 Dave Thomas let Peter Alliss design (those with long memories may recall Peter going on about casual golfers being slicers). Holes 8, 9 and maybe 18 favour a left to right shot though.

As a muni, it is mostly fairway from the teeing grounds, no long carries. Usually safer to be half club short than long also.

5th has some deep bunkers around green (still recall starting a comp from 10th, being 5 under hcap playing this hole with wedge to green and walking off level to hcap :( )

18th is nice on a sunny day with a big group. Pub/Clubhouse garden looks over the green. Big drive can give chance of a cut in 2, but more often it is a short iron off a downhill lie over the dyke in front of the green.
