So, you think you have to pay top dollar to have a stay and break with your mates? Think again.
Thornhill golf club, is set in the picturesque countryside a mile from the village of Thornhill, which is 15 miles north of Dumfries.
Thornhill Golf club, has a 3 bedroom bunglow, adjacent to the clubhouse, which is available to rent for 2 nights minimum. More details on the bungalow later...
The course is not the longest you will ever play, but it has a good mix of par 3's, short par 4's and standard par 4's and 5's, with plenty of out of bounds to keep you on your toes.
Whilst discussing the course before our round with Jim, the Club Secretary, we were warned that 'if the 4th didn't get you, the 15th would!'. For those of you who are approaching the 15th, with a good score on your card, beware, the 15th is a very tough hole, where accuracy is paramount. It's a 480 yard, sharp dog leg left with a ditch where most golfers would look to land their tee shot, OOB down the left, train tracks to the right and a narrow fairway up to the green!!
oo: If you escape this hole with your card intact, then good on you, you only have a short par 4 and a straight par 5 to contend with!!
If I was to be slightly critical of the course at the moment, it would be the condition of the greens, some are still bobbly and not the easist to putt on, this is an issue that the club are aware of are are looking to fix it ASAP.
Now, the bungalow... The 3 bedroom bungalow sleeps 6 people, it costs £150 per night (minimum of a 2 night stay), so £50 per head for a 2 night stay, with all your golf thrown in with that price. The bungalow is large, and roomy, with private parking. The clubhouse is nice, with excellent staff and fantastic food at very affordable prices.
Would I recommend this place for a golf trip? Absolutely. It's only about 1.5 hours from Edinburgh, 1 hour from Glasgow and probably 2.5 hours from Manchester, so easilly accessible from the top half of the country.
We're looking to get this place booked up again soon for anyther weekend away, I reckon I'll need to do it soon, cause, once word gets out, we may struggle to get the days we want!!!
