Just a small point but critical point to make for anyone who reads the review of the Approach G8 in this month's magazine and rushes out to purchase this new GPS offering. This review makes absolutely no reference to the fact that this particular device (and the slightly cheaper Garmin G7) can provide slope-adjusted distances and can recommend clubs based on tracking of prior shot distances which therefore makes it completely illegal for any competition play.

I know for those that just play socially that wouldn't be an issue however isn't this a pretty important miss that should have been flagged in any half decent review?

I asked Garmin via Twitter when it was first announced but they never answered, nor made any reference to legality (although I have seen it mentioned in other reviews).

Very strange decision but I guess they are trying to distinguish themselves from other brands and couldn't find any other way to do it.

I don't understand why they'd produce something that isn't legal?

It's just not legal to use in comps. I think there is a market for the uber keen ameters and certainly pros who use devices such as this in their practice rounds and mark up their yardage books accordingly. Why therefore they can't be used in the event I don't know but thems the rules.

So, if your on a hilly course and want to take the time to mark up the effective yardages then these or a laser with 'slope' compensation feature is useful. Otherwise do like the rest of us and get an approx distance and add / subtract a club or so depending on mood and hit n hope!
