But I'm new so go easy....I'm looking to start playing this game but don't know about buying clubs, what make, type, how much is to much ect. I'm looking at a second hand set and having looking in some charity shops (yes I know), can anyone help with what make to go for as I've no idea

Hi Stewart, welcome

How much are you happy to spend initially?

You dont necessarily need to buy all the clubs up front, maybe buy a few clubs and see how you get on. Lots of top end brands; Titleist, Ping, Callaway, MD, Benross, Wilson, Cobra, Cleveland, Adams, Taylormade, Mizuno (prob missed some too!)

Thanks for the quick reply....I've looked at some full sets on gumtree between 60-100 Inc bag, Wilson was one make and titleist another. Condition is another thing I know nothing about ie cracks ect in shafts, are they easy spotted.

My dad used to play years ago, I'd be about 10, but never bothered, I would like to see if I like it. The other thing bothering me is that I don't know anyone that plays so would be going myself, end up looking and feeling stupid

Dont worry about looking and feeling stupid, some of us been playing 20+ years and still manage to do so on occasions!

If I was you Id probably look for a local pro (golf course or driving range based) that offered a series of group lessons (let us know where you are based and someone on here maybe able to recommend someone local). Initially he should be able to lend you clubs and then either source you some clubs or at least steer you in the right direction. In addition you'll get to meet some others in the same boat and have fun together learning and maybe even turn into future playing partners.

In terms of condition, cracks are easily spotted, fakes less so these days sadly and that would be the biggest risk buying without advise

Welcome along. Where abouts are you? My advice would be to get some lessons initially. A lot of ranges or PGA pros offer blocks (6 for 5 etc) so you get a firm foundation of the basics. They would also be able advise you on the best clubs for you. I would be careful of ebay and gumtree as there are a load of fakes out there. I would be looking for what they call GI (game improver) which have a cavity back as they will help the ball get in the air and are the most forgiving. Plenty of older models like Ping G15, Callaway X20 or X22 if you don't want to get a current model

Stewart, a very warm welcome, do you have any friends or family who play, if so could they loan you some clubs or go with you when you buy ?

I am a numpty, just noticed you said you have no golf playing friends, if you post on here the area where you live I bet you will get an offer from someone to go with you to choose some clubs, everyone on here loves buying shineys and even better when their money is not involved.

Welcome Stewart

Just to reiterate that if you see some clubs for a price that is to good to be true then it probably is. They will more than likely be fake.

Afternoon all , sorry for jumping in but as a new starter myself , can i ask are older clubs worth buying ? I got a set of Ping G5s on the premise the price was relatively cheap and ok to knock about while i am learning( a very slow process by the way !!!)then if and when i improve look to buying some more modern ones , so i ask , how old is too old as regards to used clubs ?

The G5s will be more than fine, very little improvements in tech since they were made

I'd say it's better to get older good quality clubs (providing they are in reasonable nick) than spend good money on basically poor quality new clubs. The older clubs will keep their value much better too when/if you replace them down-track. Some real second hand bargains out there.

Thanks guys....I'm in south Glasgow, yea might be an idea to get a lesson or 2, there's 2 clubs near me, williamwood and mearns castle, I could ask them what's what or Google it and see if there's anything like that

Having said that, if there's anyone near where I am gimme a shout
