Played 12 holes tonight, first time out since my PB last week. Played distinctly average although chipping was good. However, felt like I was thinning most of my iron shots, especially with the 4 & 5.

Is ball position too far forward a big determining factor when thinning it??

Yes your ball position can be a factor as your swing is bottoming out to early. Generally people sweep long irons unlike short ones which obviously adds to the risk of a thin hit.

Had this problem myself recently and I'm releasing the club too early. Somehow I've started to slide my hips instead of rotating and lost the shoulder movement. Basically what gibbo said I'm not staying over the ball. It relies on good timing if its out then I thin it!
