I'm thinking of joining Celtic Manor.
Advantages
year round golf
Quality greens
2 golf courses to play

What negatives do I need to be aware of...?
Sharing course with resort guests

Do you know any members there ?

What is the set up there in Regards membership numbers and rolls up etc - there is always lots of issues in regards being members of resort courses

I don't have all the details.
Members are allowed to book up to 6 weeks in advance and have each course made available to them alternatively each weekend.
I do not know anyone there but would be keen to play some team golf etc

Are you sure about the all year golf bit? I played the Roman Road during winter a couple of years ago and it was an absolute bog, my trolley and shoes were caked in mud by the time I finished.

I'd agree with that...played it last year and 2010 and Roman Road were very muddy and boggy

2 crucial things, how easy is it to get a time and how long will a round take?

I fancy the latter being 5 hours plus frequently

Yes, any resort course I've played always seems to take so much longer than a normal course. That would be enough to put me off :)

Good comments guys, thanks.
I played yesterday and it took me 4 1/2 hours. My home course use 3 1/2 to 4.
When playing in comps with members only, I would expect 4 hours or so.
I think I need to talk with a member to gather some real info.

It has a reputation of being very wet in the winter and that, along with the problems with slow play, would be a big worry for me. It is a nice resort course but not one that would feel me with warm feelings with to be a member at

Greens great all year.... rest gets very wet. Play at weekends always very slow. Monty a tough walk...Roman Rd less so. Often very busy and don't believe the "we keep one course per day members only"...they do unless they can put visitors on too!

Not much club atmosphere but great facilities and costly food and drink. The staff and management would rather have no members as make more money from green fees and hotel.

Gang moved from Dewstow last year and are not happy as treated like 2nd class citizens.

Which side of the Tunnels are you?

I'm on the free side, cut through caerleon etc. No real worries with traffic.
Are comps on Saturday or Sunday? How long is a round? Comps all year round or just summer?
Cheers

5 hours for a round, only course i would tolerate that on a regular basis would be Augusta and apparently it is not the done thing to apply.

Hello , You got to be fit as both are hilly , ok in summer but it be cold up there if the wind blows in winter
, TBH , find another club , must be a few members clubs in the area , Don`t get me wrong its nice up there but its really a resort course and as a member you will always be 2nd best ...............EYG

Ive been a member at Peterstone and tradegar park and raglan, never had winter greens but very wet always in winter. Most courses round here don't have winter greens unless we get a really bad frost.

I live in bridgend so im not far from the celtic manor, but in South Wales we got some cracking links golf courses if you want less mud and all year golf I got annoyed with boggy winter golf so I joined pyle and kenfig job done.
