Course near me has a membership thats £25 a year.. £2 off peak time green fees but the main perk of the membership has to be having an official handicap and being able to play in the monthly stableford comp.

2 members of the society im in near me are thinking of joining with me.. £25 , play 3 rounds off the whites and bamn you have your handicap..

ive even almost convinced 2 of my mates from my other society based 20 miles away to make the trek over just to get a handicap as one wants to enter to trilby tour but needs an official handicap (plays off 11 in the society plus other bits)

decent time to do aswell as they are the best local course in the winter.. super drainage..no temp tees or greens.. I mean the course is nothing to write home about.. par 67 .. but just to get a handicap got to be worth it?

Do you plan on playing there through the year? Or is it just obtain the handicap?

bit of both, I do play their often I enjoy the course when I finish work on an early and know I can get round in 3 hours with my mate or even on my own...

I am tempted to enter their comps never entered one thats not a society

my mates are joining literally to get a handicap maintained

You're mates do realise they have to play a certain amount of qualifiers to keep the handicap active.

they will no doubt play some , can always do same each year lol

I'd suggest that if they do it that way - ie only play three competitive rounds at that course - then there'll always be a whiff of banditry about whatever handicap is obtained. Three rounds at one course and a lot of golf elsewhere is not going to reflect a true handicap.

Ok, I know only three cards are needed to keep anyone's HC active, and also that the three could well be the three blinding rounds of the year so one could be saddled with something lower than should be. But to me, three isn't enough.

does make sense that 3 doesnt reflect . I expect them to get very low handicaps there as its a par 67 , 6 par 3s.. open fairways.. I shot an 88 round their recently and a 94 their yesterday.. their handicaps might be lower than they would be else where as even though the SSS for whites is 66 it plays a lot easier.. but then round there it will be a fair handicap just when they play elsewhere lol

Sounds more like using a club rather than joining one. Certainly not much being given to the game of golf, all about what's in it for you and your mates.

if you need a congu handipcap but dont want to join a course as a full member then yeah, but if you just want to keep track of your standard then you can use golfshake or something like that.

Well, he's not looking to join a club. He's looking at getting a handicap.
This scenario is probably a lot more common than people think.
Pay a small fee, play 3 rounds, get a handicap, go play Opens....
What's wrong with that?

If you look into the club their isn't exactly much they offer.. limited club house no practice areas etc.. I played there 7 times this year so it's not like I don't go there often (my most played course of this season)

they dont have a proper membership just this £25 offer and personally I want to enter the comps.. my mates want handicaps but they live far away. Play 70 rounds plus a year so not worth being full time members at a course

nothing wrong with that
