so heres my dilemma, I have bband with sky and get 12mb down and about 1mb upload.... not bad

I also have 3 teenage kids who live online, xbox360, smart phones, laptops plus use bbc iplayer and skyplayer a lot = Dad wants to do a bit of gaming and has lagtastic pings from hell = unplayable

now I could be a victorian dad and disable wireless thus having all the bandwidth to myself muhahaha (I use ethernet to my uber beast pc)

or

I work for BT as an engineer and thus entitled to free bband therfor would only have to pay line rental of £10 a month if I got a second seperate line just for me.

Part of me wants to say sod off to the kids but as we now live in the digital age I am not sure I could bring myself to it.

what ya reckon?

It's a sad, sad world when your kids live their lives on the interweave wobble thingie, even worse when you want to as well

Tell them to get a life - and then use their bandwidth :D :D

its all about the ping (not the golf company) ;)

deffo get the 2nd line

ping kills me being rural
why i love going to My Lans so i can get killed and know its cos the guys or girls better or i messed up and not down to some dog plop connection cos London users need 1tb lagless connections b4 the rest of the country gets upgraded to a normal decent broadband

Tell me about it, I got fed up of lags on CS:S when playing mixes that I ended up stopping doing it. I missed competing in ED :(

EDIT: I think ED is long gone now anyway

I think you shoudl do whatever makes you feel better :)

And while you're at it, seeing as you knwo what you ar etalking about, you can pop over to Wokingham and help sort out my 0.23Mbpps download and upload speeds (with ENHANCED broadband!) and then appreciate what some of us have to put up with - I never did understand why anyone would use YouTube or BBC iPlayer when all you get is a static picture !

do it, charge the kids the tenner and make sure you sort out the cables out in the street (midnight is a good time) to ensure you have the fastest in the street. or so ive heard :D :D

Correct me if I am wrong but it is possible to have two lines that feed just one modem. We have 6 lines in at my work as our net is painfully slow otherwise. One of the downsides of a rural business park sharing an exchange with a ever expanding town down the road.

just because you work for BT and get the BB free as an employee don't be frightemned to ring customer services to ensure your getting the correct strength signal. One of my golf buddies works as a BT engineer he was having the same problem, rang and now has 3 times his original upload speed

You should do a lot better than that in Woke. We are your poor relations (in broadband terms) in Arborfield Cross exchange and get about 5Meg most of the time.

What ISP are you with?

Sky
The guy we bought the house from worked for Microsoft at TVP, and he said that the connection was s**t*. Apparently we are so far frmo teh hub in Wokingham that there are so many connections in between and we are left with bugger all bandwith by the time it gets to us.

I've no idea whetehr that's the truth or not - i'm not particularly IT-wise

I assume that you cant get BT infinity because that would be the obvious choice. If you get 12mb now with Sky my guess is that BT have not bothered running fibre to the cabinet in your street.

I had poor bandwidth as I was at the maximum distance from the exchange so we were prime candidates for the FTTC (BT Infinity). Now 40mbps down , 8mbps up.

You can get a second line and aggregate the 2 into 1 router, I think that would be better than having 2 seperate routers. That way you will be able to utilise the maximum bandwidth available when the kids are not online and vice versa.

am with sky for main t'internet

have ordered the bt line, we go infinity in august and free upgrade to 40mb luvvliness :)

I got 8mb with bt before as I was on 20cn, new line will be 21cn then infinity..... fookers baffle me with all the diff products, even worse being an engineer and working on 1960's plant one minute then uber modern stuff the next lol :)
