For the last couple of years iv'e tee'd off every Sunday around 9am ,

I noticed i struggle with the 1st few of holes , having chatted with HiD , ive decided to change it around this year im going to play later maybe 11.30/12 , im going to hit the range to loosen up and hit a few putts that im never in the form for at 8.30am..

Has anyone else changed like this and have ye seen any benefits or otherwise ?

Thoughts appreciated

Interesting concept, I find that if i play later i spend too long 'preparing for the round' and often overthink it. Thats partly why i prefer early morning tee times.

I'd expect you'd have to be prepared for a slower round at lunctime too...

Depends on what else is going on. In an ideal world I'd do the same as I'd like bit of a lie in, cooked b/fast, up the club, coffee and then on to range / short game area / putting green followed by trouble free 18 holes, a beer (or two) and then back home where dinner would be waiting.

Back to reality, kids, wife and house all need time, work is busy so reality is that an 8 am tee allows me to be done by 12 ish and back home before 1 to spend the remaining day and a half with the family. In the summer I normally manage to get to the range by 7:30 but this time of year it is too dark / cold / shut!

Actually the other way around in our place , hard to get tee time 7.30-1 , goes quiet for the afternoon .

This was the reason for my early start aswell so im home early .. HiD goes to he mam's every Sunday & the kids cousins etc do be there so they are reluctant to firstly get up early Sunday then a struggle to come home til the other kids are going home aswell .. so the "new" plan is family breakfasts & time , we all head off our own ways then all home by 6ish type thing .. only time will tell if its better or not as family time will take precedence over golf

my brother tees off every Saturday at 7.40 during the summer. when I join him I never play all that well. far too early for my blood.

last time wee played the long approach to the 3rd was straight into the rising sun. as soon as I hit it I asked my brothers mate has he seen it. didn't see a thing. LB

I personally like 9.30, no rush then. Played a couple of comps last year that i had 8am and it was all a rush. Trouble with hitting balls before I play is i tend to tail of at the end of the round. Id rather have a slow start than a slow finish.

For me it's not the time but the if I have chance to go on the range before that make a huge difference. 8am start with 20 mins on the range is (relatively) fine, 11am start straight onto the tee and from all the evidence of my golfing history, I will not start as well. I think it's mostly a confidence thing.

I think I really need to warm up, hit a few balls and preferably a few chips and putts to get my feel together. I never think that I play my best in the early holes if I don't.

I've been known to turn up at the club at 6.30 when I've got a 7.30 tee time in a comp!

A couple of years ago I went from playing my bounce games at 9amish tee time to playing in the afternoon 12-1:30pmish depending on time of year and light. The main reason was I can get things done on a Sat morning before leaving with/for kids and then back for tea.

Only downside can be when its a lovely morning then the rain comes in about lunchtime

As for a warm up...that's the heater on full blast in the car on the way to the club!

Regardless of tee off time It used to really bug me if I didn’t get 20 minutes dedicated to warm up or practice and I blamed it on any poor start I had (got a reputation for using that excuse with PP’s) but with car sharing and other factors I knew I had to deal with it somehow or accept that the score was going to be higher (when there really was no need to blame pre-round activities)

So I started seeing it as part of my course management, if I haven’t warmed up then why take a driver off the first unless it’s a really wide fairway, instead take my safe club and swing well within myself. No time on practice green means pay extra attention to other players putting before me for a speed read on 1st green. Also loosen up the swing for longer club on 1st & 2nd tee boxes as other players are faffing about

Nowadays I still prefer a practice but don’t let it bother me if I don’t get it

I guess there are many other better reasons for moving to a later tee time (like wife/kids etc) but I wouldn’t look for improved performance as one of them

I normally turn up around 20-30 minutes before my tee time regardless of what time that is.

The problem with a later start is all the extra coffee I've had time to drink goes right through me!

At my previous club it was 745 for breakfast, teeing off from 0900-1000 depending on how many turned up for the roll-up, so a couple of swings in the net and a quick putt was about the extent of pre-round warmup.

Since I joined a new club last year, the group I play with go out between 1200 and 1230, and as late as 1400 in the summer when light is not a consideration. PLenty of time for a lie-in, bit of family/house stuff in the morning etc.

Still tend to not hit the practice ground before hand though, despite getting to the club typically 45-60 mins before the tee-time. Will spend 15-20 mins on the putting green though, and warm up with full swings and stretches for 5-10 mins before the off.

I try to go on the first tee without any thoughts in my head, and I find if I hit a bucket of balls before going out, I tend to be mentally trying to fix whatever issues are apparent that day.

I think around 9 / 9:30 is ideal.

Get up at 7ish, coffee and breakfast. Up to the club an hour before tee off. 20 mins on the range, 25 mins putting and ready to go.

If I play later it consumes too much of my day. I like to be back for around lunchtime, not later than 2, and spend the rest of the day with the missus.

Even if I played at 11, I'd still only arrive at the club at 10 and I wouldn't get anything productive done before golf, so might as well play a bit earlier as I see it.

However it most easily fits into your day. The worst thing is feeling rushed or under pressure to get round and get home, or not having enough time for a proper warm up.

If i remember rightly there was a thing on the news the other week about a study into when we perform best at sports.
If you're a night owl then you tend to perform better from late afternoon/evening but if you're an early riser then peak time is late morning/early afternoon
So early morning starts shouldn't benefit anyone!!

I prefer early. If I tee off later I just spend the morning thinking about it, then I'll invariably turn up too early, get bored waiting and by the time I tee off I've had enough. I like to get there and get going as early as possible
