The game golf device, I know there's a game golf user group thread its quite a big thread and for people that already have a game golf.

I have a few questions and hope can get them answered here.

1st - Ive heard the tag shots are not very accurate Ive some of the shots tagged as as much as 10 yards out sometimes, that's nearly a full club out, has anyone ever come across this problem?.

2nd - The software is awkward and fiddly take forever to adjust a round and doesn't give enough any useful stats?

3rd - Very poor battery life?

4th - Build quality? I read a review, He wrote the device seemed very cheap and broke too easily.

Its quite expensive device is it really worth the cost?

I have said device and have had no problems apart from forgetting to tag the odd shot, however the device can sense when you take a shot, so puts a prompt on the editing area.

your points in order

1, Its a GPs based system and pretty accurate, Ive never noticed a problem
2, takes 2 minutes to go through and check, obviously longer if you forget to tag a dozen shots, the more you do it th eeasier it becomes
3. My device will last 2 1/2 rounds, you can charge it up on a pc or laptop or use a usb car charger if you are "on tour"
4. Its a small light plastic box that clips to your belt, you aren't meant to stand on it, no problems with mine.
5. Buy a used one on ebay,

the best bits of info I get are actual club distances, spread of shots, number of putts FIR & GIR, it is improving all the time.

Its competition legal as it gives all the info in retrospect, you can see how wayward you are and where to tighten up

try one and sell it on if you dont like it

Give it a whirl if you enjoy stats. I can pretty much work out the weak parts of my game without one. It begins at address and finishes with the follow through. Knowing yardages is useful though, but I bought a rangefinder for this which is far more use to me on the course.

I personally think that unless you are a complete "spec head" it's the kind of thing where the novelty value could wear off quite quickly.

Much of what has been said.

I really like mine and agree with all of Phil's answers to your direct question and if you only have a passing interest in this stuff then it may or not be for you. It seems to be getting increasingly popular so resale values are strong so you won't lose much if you have a punt.

Other than real (not forum) insight into club distances, the best bit for me is the analysis section pitting the top half dozen or so stats that characterise your golf against those in the same and next better hcp bracket. If you are the sort of person that has a lesson or two to improve rather than fix a specific problem, then it really helps inform this also. This is my sheet for my hcp and next grp:

Conclusion is for now short game must be my focus but some straighter drives (which will fix distance at the same time) will be helpful in getting to next level. Did I know that if I stopped to think, probably but I like this sort of stuff and the relative gaps will inform the emphasis I spend on each which is more tricky to be self-aware on.

Hope this helps,

Simon

Two regular PP have them and both love them

Can certainly see the use for people who like stats and it seems a very nice bit of kit

I personally would only find it useful to ensure the distances I hit for each club but have that drilled down now but if I got a new set then would look to use game golf to help me with - and anyone who knows me on here in regards stats etc will know that it's not something I would consider unless I can see the benefit

I can see a lot of these changing hands quickly as people get their distances sorted

Of all the gadgets etc that has come out this is clearly the one that has the best use for all golfers

This is actually a downside for me.
The distances you get are exactly that - pure distance.
Pure distance is largely irrelevant.
If I ask anyone who has GG how far they hit their 6 iron, if they use their GG stat, all that can give me is carry + roll, say 165 yards.
Roll is uncontrollable.
You have 158 yards to carry a bunker.
Take your 6 and you're in the bunker as you're not carrying 165.....
Flawed information - probably accurate enough on soft fairways but miles out in Summer.

Isn't knowing the total distance and estimating how far you carried it better than estimating both?

Interesting stuff. I must admit to being a wee bit tempted by one of these devices.

Another question for those that do (with apologies to the OP)... Do the comparisons such as the above take gender into account? Obviously it's not relevant for many of them but stuff like driving distance wouldn't give much insight if my wee 230 yard drives were getting compared with whatever distance male 4 handicappers send it out to.

Why not just estimate the carry..?
Or hit balls into a bunker from different distances - most people couldn't accurately differentiate between a ball pitching at 160 yards. Some will guess 150, some 170
All I'm saying is that total distance doesn't really mean much...

I'd argue that total distance is more important seeing as where the ball stops in relation to the hole is more relevant than where it might first bounce (for the majority of shots).

It may be more important but you can't control, from 160 yards, how much roll you're going to get, certainly at the moment, due to the firmness, or otherwise, of the course.
What use is it knowing that a 6 iron will roll out 20 yards on hole A when it may roll out 5 on the next?
The only distance you can control is carry - plain and simple.
And GG doesn't give you that.

Had my first round yesterday. Some good stuff and very easy to use. Didn't download it as I was mucking about a bit on the back nine and distances and clubs skewed but the stuff it gave for the front nine all looked accurate
