I thinking of getting a new driver I currently have a taylormade quad driver 10.5,I have played alright with the club but find a slight miss hit and the ball goes all over the place and have heard these are hard to use for a novice, as I have only been playing since last summer and now looking to get a ping g5 driver. I think I would be better with a 460CC driver head more forgiving. I would just lind to find out peoples opinions.

cheers rob

G5 is a good solid driver that you won't go far wrong with. Also available quite cheap.

But the driver you've got is good too. Maybe a lesson or 2 to sort out your bad swing could save you money??

I play with a quad, and I find it a great club. I'm not a novice but a mid H'capper. I think you'll find if you miss hit any club they will go all over the place.

There is no "magic" club that will improve your game, but there are clubs that will suit you more than others. Your best bet is to get to your local pro or AG and try as many as posible with some advice to help you choose best for you.

Id usually say that Custom Fitting is the way to go, but with respect, if you've only been playing since last summer, your swing probably isnt consistent enough yet to gain any benefit.

Even off 11 H/C, it is difficult to find the sweetspot with a Driver consistently, as I found out recently at my own Custom Driver Fitting at Titleist, courtesy of GM. (See this weeks issue apparently - not seen it yet.)

Ironicallly, I may be willing to sell my previous G5 if you're after one ?
:D

Lessons are the way forward, you have a perfectly good driver.

If you were to change, the square Nike is as forgiving as any, if you can get over the looks and the noise.

Hi,
The newer taylormades are easier to hit than the Quad which i think is only 400cc there are a lot of great deals out there for second hand clubs go get a fitting and then see if you can find it second hand or a good deal on line.

I concur that a lesson may solve the majority of the problems. THere are so many decent dirvers in varying price brackets so its hard to give you a definitive answer. If I was in your shoes I would be looking at TM burner (08 and 09 model), Yonex Nanospeed, MD, Ping G10 (and G5 if you can find them) and the Cally 460 big bertha.

Its horses for courses though. I'm not sure your game is ready for a C/F driver yet (it will get there) but you need to try as many shafts (regular, stiff etc) as possible. One manufacturers stiff is anothers regular.

I think you're in danger of wasting your money.

Having said that (??) before I was persuaded into the 21st century (I had a 1995 driver!! :)) I did in fact try a super quad and a Ping g5 around a course for a day. For me, there was no comparison (for my swing) and the G5 won the day.

Truth is, I went and bought a C/F Callaway FT-3, but I always hankered after the Ping and picked one up a few months later. I use both now. The G5 is great and I found it far more suited to me than the superquad.....but beware.....one person's experience is hardly representative.

Drivers are generally a thing of vanity.

Lessons are a must. Fine by all means try different drivers, but I'd say give the one you've got enough of a chance before thinking of changing, unless you just fancy a change for changes sake.

I had one lesson when I started and try to pick up tips watching youtube on my computer and going up the range twice a week.I have improved since the summer and towards lasts year broke 90 once on a simple course usually get low 90s, Somedays I drive really well with the taylormade quad, but find it hard to be consistant with it and Ive heard the ping g5 will have a lot more forgiving. I am loving my golf at the moment and would love to get to a decent standard.

Cheers for the advice

A bit of both, I think its something to do with my clubface position when hitting the ball and just dont feel that confident when drving.

i went from the G5 to R7 limited and i would like to say its the driver which has improved my slice but i think its a combination of me hitting it softer along with the draw bias which has straightened me out.
i did slip back into the slice of old on my last round but thinking about it afterwards i think it was more down to trying to hit her 300yards rather than a gentle swing for 260odd.
and confidence is they key in my opinion

If you hit 260 with an easy swing you must hit a monster ball. Since getting my SG5 4 months ago, only 2 guys I have played with have hit it over 260, they both hit a good ball, and have clocked 260ish once each. Average for them is nearer 240.

If you can hit 260 with an easy swing, why would you ever try to hit it harder?

Bare in mind this is not even spring yet & its still bloomin' cold out there. So drives are not going to fly...

Though sometimes they may look like they are flying until you walk upto your ball & find how short it actually has gone. Yesterday The lads thought I'd creamed some of my drives, but when we got to them, they were not that long. Admidedly I don't tend to get much if any rollout on my drives.

But he was talking of his last round, so unless he hasn't played for 8 months, we are talking a current drive of 260, which is impressive, since the guys I play with who hit 260 last weekend give it everything.
