Might sneak out to Lisbon for a few days next month. I just realised that we have never been to Portugal before. Wont be a golfing trip, just family day outs. Doing my regular research, but any dos/dont-dos from the forum? Still to do my bookings, so have some flex

I would take a Sagres over a superbock, although a good beer none the less!

Lisbon? Never been, get on tripadvisor and mooch about, sure there is plenty of stuff to see and do!

Its never been on the list before... have some points that I want use by next month so will come handy. Any other city in southern Europe/warm place which will have a bit of sun, family day outs also currently not majorly affected by the humanitarian crisis going on??

Oh there are tons of places i would go,

Madrid
Sofia
Zagreb
Bratislava
Munich (Oktoberfest!)
Dubrovnic
Bucharest
Barcelona
Lovely little town in spain just north of Benidorm called Calp (or Calpe) have family there, its great for all and the joys of benidorm are 30 mins away.
Or get down to the Algarve, so many options here and the weather will be better than Lisbon! Carvoeiro is my fav little fishing town

Lisbon, I personally wouldn't have it in my places to visit list, im sure its lovely with stuff to do, just more places i would want to visit / revisit.

Been a few times to Barcelona... never disappoints...
Cant do Oktoberfest with a kid around... dont want to get him drinking so soon...

Madrid is a good option, not been there yet,.. I thought Algarve was overrun by golfers so will be on my pilgrimage list soon anyways..

Algarve golf is a big part of their tourism for sure, but there are some fantastic family things to do! Some awesome waterparks, beaches, walks, historic towns, great food etc etc. Its not just a golf destination!!

Madrid for a long time, has been my fav city break, the royal gardens i could walk round for hours stopping off at a street vendor selling coffee, food, beer. Such a nice vibe in the city. Well worth a visit IMHO, but for me now, south eastern europe is my fav.

I am tempted w/ Madrid.. Is Madrid as warm and expensive as your FGW ride into London?

About the same!

Nah, Madrid will be pleasant, not as warm as the costa's or Algarve, but should be mid to high teens. Its a capital city, never going to be cheap, but trip advisor is a must have to find some hidden gems!

Its a lovely town, right on a steep hill. Its my sister in laws family that moved there, my BIL and her got married there a few years back and we stayed there for a week.

Beautiful scenery, the rock or the Peñón de Ifach to be precise is stunning, whether to look at or to climb as we did. The town its self it not overly commerciallised or touristy, it has the odd few bits, like a little train that goes round the town (Not up the steep hills in the rain as we found out!!!), the beach is stunning, its long, clean. Great selection of places to eat, really nice hotel we stayed in (the main one in the tow, cant remember what its called!)

All in all, very nice fairly unspoiled and 30 mins from the bedlam of Benidorm and easy to get to from either Valencia or Alicante.

If you end up there needing a builder or a boat/car mechanic, let me know! her dad is a builder and brother a boat spanner monkey..

Lisbon, gorgeous city and very hilly, had one of my best ever meals there. €25 pp all you can drink and 10 course Tapas.
drove there this year from the Algarve and it seemed a lot of walking up and down up and down to see the sights. Have to use the trams to be honest.
on the Sunday before driving back to the Algarve we drove to Belem ( 10 mins by Tram from Lisbon) to have "Pasties de Belem". Oh Lordy Lordy. It must be the best cake shop/cafe in the world.
At Belem is a cathedral and statue over looking the city and bay which give some fantastic views of Lisbon. Not sure if they do they bus tours of the City but if they do deffo use it.
very nice hilly City but Barcelona, Budapest, Prague and Krakov may have a bit more interest if taking kids and they won't whinge as much when walking.

PS, don't know how I forgot to say deffo Berlin by a country mile and deffo Riga for a cheap cultural weekend.

Went to Lisbon with the Navy in 2010. Don't have great memories of the place due to getting a pasting by the local police the first night we were there. Not the only place the local constabulary have made me feel welcome!

Think I went to Estoril as well on the train. There was definitely a beach somewhere also.

Judith Chalmers I ain't
