Thinking back (can't spell reminiscing!!), I miss:-
Unwrapping a brand new Dunlop 65, then scuffing/cracking it soon after
Tongues on golf shoes
The sound of metal spikes
Vinyl golf bags/straps.
Ricketts.

And you?, what to you miss from your golfing past ?

Reading the thread the other day about what sets of Irons we've had, some of those brand names bought back some memories of when they were quite good:

Daiwa - if I remember correctly Baker-Finch played them?
Tommy Armour
John Letters
Ben Sayers
Maxfli
Slazenger as a decent brand - especially their wound golf balls.

..the smell off my hands from a days golf with the older rubber grips ;)

..being able to pick the ball out the hole without making a noise:o

Getting dropped off at the golf club at about 8am in school holidays. Getting home about 12 hours later having played 36 holes (sometimes 54). Happy days. That's how juniors' handicaps drop by 15 shots in a year....

Not to mention the £70 a year membership fees.

The Dunhill Team Championship at St Andrews on the beeb in Autumn.
Ditto World Matchplay from Wentworth the previous/following week.

Ping Beryllium wedges hitting a balata ball.... spintastic.

Yes balata balls. Unwraping a new one (as has been said). Then nearly cutting it in half with the first shot as you thinned it. Oh happy days. Still have 2 sleeves of Dunlop 65's somewhere unopened.

Playing well, and winning competitions. A pint and a sandwich in the bar after a round for less than a quid. The thrill of buying a persimmon driver. They were almost too beautiful to hit with. Long hot sunny summers, and they didn't get much hotter than 1976.

Balata's
Ultra competiton 90's
bags that had a separate stand not an integral one.
metal spikes
waterproofs like bin liners

agree with that, ultra 90's were superb.

also miss when the howson hippo plus driver was actually one of the best you could buy and it only cost about £70!

The old BBC Open Golf music, when it started I got goosebumps

They should never have messed with that music.

I miss beryllium Ben Hogan Special SI wedges, and the Ram Tom Watson models from the same era (late 80s/early 90s)

Plus, the old fashioned Maxfli tour bags - maroon/cream colour. Wonderful.

Definitely the pace of play. If you took 3 hrs 20 mins for a 3 ball medal you would be greeted on your return with remarks about " sending out a search party "
But etiquette was, generally, better observed with all showing more consideration for fellow golfers; and this was only the early 80's not 1930's.

I've not really played long enough to have a history and miss anything except I did play a bit as a kid with my lovely, golf-mad Dad and I'd give anything to play a round of golf with him today :(

I miss the school years where I never bothered with golf to the extent I do now. Wasted years for me.
Titleist Professional Balls

2 guys from Gourock who have sadly died who were great golfers but even greater guys in the bar for a laugh and a joke.
