Well after being extremely frustrated with my game a week or so ago, I am now on an enormous high.
My main problem was the mental game, mostly on the back nine, I would play well within my handicap on the front 9 only to boil up on the way in, but after a good matchplay tie last Monday I seem to have turned a corner.

Instead of thinking about my usual problem holes and worrying needlessly about how I was going to play them I am now only thinking about the hole I am playing and my game has improved dramaticly.

Played in the Tuesday medal and shot my best medal round ever a scratch 78 nett 65, and in the medal today I topped that with a scratch 75 nett 63.
I have now gone from 14 to 10.7 in the last week and can hardly wait to get back out again.

You gotta love this game and how it can all change so quickly.

Excellent progress Toad.

A hell of a drop in such a short time. How did you learn to focus your thoughts? any tips for the rest of us?

Keep up the great work.

John.

Great stuff Toad. I presume you picked up the prizes with such fine scores. Be warned I came tumbling down last year 1613 in six weeks and it really does take some getting use to especially on certain holes where you have always stood on the tee and said "its ok I get a shot here!"

Good to see the hard work paying off though. Keep it going

Well done Toad. Good news and good advice.

It's amazing how well we/you can play with the right mental attitude. I try to make 6 pars at my course (off 12) as a starter on each round. The first 3 holes are gifts, sometimes I par the lot, others, I bogey them all with "just-off-target" shots. I have long since given up getting worried about it and often make up those 3 pars elsewhere. If I got all twitchy and started forcing the pace, I reckon I could shoot 90 or worse easily.

Your post is a great reminder of the need to be patient and stay in the "here and now" if you don't want to waste a potentially good card.

The point you make Toad really is pertinent, especially as I threw away a potentially excellent round on Friday because of this exact situation. Thanks for bringing it up and hopefully I can learn from this and also take a step in the right direction.

Well played.

Thanks all.

Johng, the advice I received was from my usual playing partner, he said I am always trying to figure out what I should score right after I have finished the front 9, and then start talking about what I am hoping for on 14+15, where it usually goes wrong for me.
He said it does not matter what you have shot upto now and to take it one hole at a time as you don't have a score until you have tapped in at 18.

A_F would love to be single figures for Berwick but still a long way to go, also need to keep shots in reserve to try and beat Madandra the bandit. ;)

Good work toad....I have to admit that I have the same failing twice in recent weeks I've stood on the 11th tee +1 gross and then stood on the 12th at +3 and +5!

Then yesterday I was 10 over after 10 (3 lost balls) and went on to par the 11th with 2 cracking shots and a narrowly missed 1st putt!

If I can do like you have after a decent start I should be sorted!!
Here's hoping!
