Just watching a program on the telly that said haggis originated in England. Not done too much research on the subject but we seem to have told anyone who will listen that we invented it.

Seem to recall similar facts (although not invented in England) about the T.V., the telephone, x-rays, whatever it was that Lister was meant to have done.

Ach, I suppose someone needs to take the credit for it.

not sure its anyone's finest moments mincing up sheep innards with some oatmeal

The name was first used in England in 14xx something, although with a different spelling. Does it really matter?

That aside, I love it.

Haggis is just a bag of rubbish. The very poor would have made something like it everywhere in the UK.

Similar to when we were in Italy with Italian Friends in Bergamo alto. They were looking for a resturaunt before we flew home. They wanted to choose a nice place for us. After an hour of going backwards and forwards we found a place. God it was fancy, they all ordered fancy starters. We had minestrone soup, it was explained to us that minestrone soup was invented by the peasants. Probably why I loved it.

Er Rontgen (X-Rays) was German; Lister (Antiseptic) was from London! Perhaps you meant Antibiotics (Fleming)! James Young Simpson was the first to use Chloroform as an anesthetic for humans!

Yup. Your post proves my original point. Rontgen did discover x-rays but the worlds first radiology dept. was at Glasgow Royal infirmary, and so the myth of x-rays originating in Glasgow was born.

More or less the same with Lister. As he worked most of his life in Glasgow it's a misconception that it was borne from a scottish hand.

Singer sewing machines is another myth.

The myths only work if you know nothing about the subject matter or you don't know how to use google. 😀

Well, Scotland was for some time the instigator/driver of medical developments (and advances in engineering too)! Lister (West Ham born) certainly did most of his work in Glasgow! While there is still plenty being done, Scotland has, unfortunately, lost its position at the absolute forefront of medical research purely because the major driver of research is now the mighty Dollar!
