The bloody Government are going to build a thumping great high-speed railway line straight through my golf club!
Bas***ds!!!!!!!

Ok its a few years away but there'll be no investment in the club if they know its going to die in 5-10 years time. Hopefully the route will be changed but I'm not holding my breath.

Another club in the area is in danger of being turned into a housing estate (Weston Turville) so its really going to cut down the number of accessible courses in the area.

Not nice. Fingers crossed for you that it won't happen.

Imagine how Homer feels at Ascot where they have to share their second and third fairways with a banger racing team every third Sunday
;)

I wouldn't worry Imurg. It's taken 3 years to lay less than a mile of Tram tracks in Edinburgh so far so I think you should have 25 years or so before the necessary workies are available to build any train tracks through your course.

I can't see Lord Rothschild letting that happen. He put up enough of a fight restricting the number of bunkers you have because he didn't want to spoil his view. Your course is on the right side of Aylesbury to be protected. They originally left space to put a relief road between your course and the housing estate but screwed the calc's up and now there isn't enough room. All propoganda if you ask me. As for Western Turville again there's plenty of other areas being sought to build on better than that flood plain. They could've built on the land at the back of Broughton but decided against it and thats just farm land. We'll all be long gone before the 1st high speed train comes anywhere near us. ;)

Our club lost three holes when they built the Swindon to Gloucester dual carriageway about 10 or 12 years ago. Luckily the club had the foresight to buy an adjoining field and were then able to replace the 3 lost holes.

All of the older members say that the 3 new ones are a poor substitute for the holes that were lost.

The 10th tee is within 30 yds of the road and is a little noisy at times too.

Should have built better ones surely? My old club, Nairn Dunbar, lost it's 3 worst holes to new housing many years ago and replaced them with three of the best holes you'd care to play. Every one a peach.

It's in the Cotswolds JF, trying to get permission to build anything is hard work. I never saw the old holes so can't offer a comparison, IMO only one of the new holes is "poor".

There was even opposition from the closest village that there were trees being planted to give the holes definition!! "Not in my back yard" sums a lot of locals attitudes in the Cotswolds up perfectly.

I wouldn't worry about it. Labour won't be in power in a couple of months and the country hasn't got the estimated £30 billion to pay for it. When it goes to review there'll be a long winded, pointless discussion which will result in the plan being canned as it's not worth spending 30 billion you haven't got to knock 17 minutes off the journey time to London.

It'll never happen, just the usual round of pointless pre election guff

Or maybe it's one of those Yes Minister things, where they chose one route that everyone objects to and they don't really want to use. Everyone kicks off, big enquiry then the real route is suggested, and that's where it goes. Years away yet I would think.

A course near me lost some holes for a motorway extension Denton GC in Manchester, the club bought extra land and re-developed the course, I believe that the members all got a decent compensation pay out as well - was a while ago and i was a kid so not 100% on details - sure someone can update us

My club is talking of selling the 2nd and 3rd holes off just to keep the club afloat, possibly another housing estate. Times are hard.
