Heard on the news that a security guard is getting prosecuted for manslaughter, after he tackled a shop lifter who wouldn't stop when asked, said shop lifter when tackled by the guard fell on the glasses he had stolen, cut his leg and bled to death.

For me that's Karma, just reward for being a thief, and before the PC brigade jump up and down waving their hands, claiming he may stolen the glasses to sell to feed his family or for some other just reason. To be clear, there is no just reason to steal.

You should read the article a bit further. He has been held on suspicion of manslaughter, while they investigate if it was a proportional level of force or not. If you tackle someone and they die, I would hope they held you to check exactly what happened, rather than just assume you told the truth.

It's a strange area of the law and unless the law has changed in the UK the security guard has no power to detain someone, let alone rugby tackle them to the floor. When a security guard asks you to stop when you leave a shop you can just walk on and he can't do anything about it. A shops security guard does not hold powers of arrest, so can't detain anyone.

That's not correct, you can make a civilian arrest with reasonable force.

"A person is allowed to restrain the person they are performing a citizen’s arrest upon, but the term ‘reasonable’ is not clearly defined. As a result, whether force is deemed reasonable or not depends on the specific circumstances of the arrest."

not true. you have exactly the same powers as the police. the only difference is a copper can arrest you if he "thinks" your going to commit a crime
