Finally watched the last 2 episodes last night. And even got to the end without knowing any spoilers, no thanks though to some of the reporting going on in the paper now about the riots in Baltimore. Who seem to love putting in references to events that happen in The Wire.

Anyway, if you have not seen it, do yourself a favour, go here http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Wire-Complete-HBO-Season/dp/B001BBHG1S and click on Add To basket. Best investment you will make in a long time. Superlative TV.

Second series was terrible and towards the end the stories got ridiculous, but the 1st series was superb and 3 and 4 held their own.

Sheeeiiiiii....

I only just caught up with this a few months ago. Watched 2 or 3 episodes a night when I could. Really enjoyed it although the 'lingo' was hard to understand sometimes!

Subtitles is your friend;) Also after watching each one I went to a website that reviewed/summarised each episode in detail. I think as there is so much going on that is interconnected, and some of these plot points may only last one scene, then you need a summary. There were so many times when I read the summary and went to myself 'I didn't realise that'.

Some of this may be down to the fact that nowadays most TV shows don't require you to concentrate much. So you get out of practice of concentrating hard on every scene. Look at most crime shows/who dun its where they have a 'Basil Exposition' bit at the end every time, or they always start the show with 'previously on xxxxx, The Wire never had one of those so you had to pay attention. My wife watched The Wire at the same time as using her iPad, which was a mistake.

Also as you say the language was very hard to penetrate at times. But it was so worth it, and the closest a TV program or film that I have ever seen has come to replicating the experience of reading a multi-layered book.

Omar comin' :D

It's worth watching the final series, Val. It definitely dips in the middle series but it finishes really, really strongly.

Not sure it's the best TV series ever (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy holds that position in my opinion) but it's definitely up there in the top few.

I didnt watch the last series as I found it lost it's way BUT maybe i was a bit quick in that thought.

Possibly, the serial killer story seemed to annoy a lot of people and I think after 4 series's of getting to know the characters then you may want to see more of them, and may be not so much of the goings on at the paper. But I'd definitely watch it, just for the last 2 episodes if nothing else where everyone's stories (well those that are still alive) gets tied up very well.

I agree it was one of the best shows the USA have given us. If it gets repeated I will watch it again. As for Tinker Tailor I have watched it at least three times and have it on disk ready to watch again.

TTSS - Brilliant series.

The Wire is extremely good, and supposedly one of the most real to life dramas... plus even better when you see two great British actors doing the accent so well that Americans think that they are one of their own.

Still prefer The West Wing though.

Just couldn't get into Breaking Bad. Never grabbed me (stopped watching mid way through the 3rd series).

I know, who knew Omar was from Tunbridge Wells and Bubbles was from Slough!!!

And I'm with you on Breaking Bad, I only managed 2 episodes. May try it again some day but not sure if I will ever get the time.

2 episodes isn't enough, BB is a slow burner and needs at least a season and half.

Anyone watch Sons of Anarchy? I thought it was very good.

I enjoyed SOA at the second time of asking. BB took me a couple of episodes before I started getting into it.

Better call Saul is worth watching. Every bit as good as BB but different.

Didn't make it past episode 2 on that, shame as I was hoping it would be great.
Agree about Breaking Bad, starts slightly slowly and the first series is more about his battle against cancer. 2nd series onwards is a different beast.

:ooo: you lucky sod, wish I hadn't watched it yet.

Please go back and try again. It's stunning

The Wire is one of my all time favorite TV shows alongside

The West Wing
Battlestar Galactica (2003 remake)
The Sopranos
