I met Viscount17 for the first time today, he came over to my course for a round.

On the only Par 5 on the course he hits a 240yd drive, then a 6 iron which falls about 2yds off the green, then sinks a 10ft putt for the eagle.

An excellent achievement and a great hole to have witnessed.

Was that a 240yd drive followed by a 240yd 6 iron, or do you have shorter par 5s? Only kidding.....
What a way to do it.....in front of a fellow forumer.....none of the April 1st dodgyness....

Well Done Viscount !

Oh it was the highlight, though I sneaked in a couple of very satisfying pars.

minty and I played at the Cromwell, near St Neots. Teed off at mid-day in the inaugaural meeting of the Middle Earth division of GMfuGS and the snow had cleared; apart from a couple of very minor flurries the day was intermittent sunshine and cloud, overall a lovely day for golf.

minty is better than his 28, he just has to believe it. he's got a swing with his irons I would kill for, just loses it with the woods (he's got a lesson booked).

the course is fairly forgiving but with a few unkind hazards and some wicked greens, and with a real sadist setting the pins. overall the putters were being unkind, I can't count the number that lipped.

this was also the first real outing of the new irons and wedge. generally pretty pleased with the irons and love the 56*, I had a pretty good day from close in, a couple loose but it's getting there. It took a bit to let the irons work and not try to make them into the old set so still finding the distance. (my drives were a bit wayward to say the least, when they were good . . )

for both of us it's a case of tightening up what we do reasonably well and, for now, settle for bogey golf, accepting the pars and better as they come and eliminating the, all too frequent, doubles and worse. I would say that we both played 12 holes pretty well, it's the other six!

so a lot of firsts; the first (but most definitely not the last) meeting with a fellow forumer, the first outing for the irons, the first time at the Cromwell, the first eagle and on Wednesday my first ever medal.

Nice, must be a great happening within a round, after getting your first eagle you probably don't worry about your overall score as much due to the elation, if you catch my drift. Congratulations anyway, lets hope you get another one in that medal you're playing on Wednesday.

My first eagle was on a par 4. I hit a fairly nice drive with my hippo...then took aim at the red pin. Hooked the hell out of it to the green to the left, straight in the hole. Turned out I was aiming at the wrong green!!! Next one was 3 years later on a par 5, this time, not some freaky luck!!!

Great stuff. Where are you in the country to get a game. We are snowed off in Berkshire. Did he beat you or was the eagle his highlight

I've just had a quick tally up and with Viscount off 24 and me off 28 i beat him on stableford and nett strokes... Only by a point and a stroke though so maybe my handicap rather than my golf beat him.

All in all i really wasn't happy with how i played and only had one putt drop from over 3ft (i've been consistently sinking a atleast 5 4ft+ putts a round) but today just didn't go for me.

Viscount's game around the greens was of the highest quality today, sticking it close to the pin more often than not.

Loose shots/brief lapses in concentration cost us both a good few shots today but what with the cold and a few pauses in play (society in front) it wasn't too bad.

I can't remember the last eagle I had. I use to be able to drive some of the par 4's at Wimbledon Common as a youngster (through them in Summer) and would always rack up an eagle a month on average.

Sadly those days are long gone so unless I can hole a shot or hit two Sunday bests on a par 5 it'll be a long time coming again

Come on Homer: can't live on past glory you know! And anyone can drive the Big Ravine or Blockade at Wimbledon Common. I've never had an eagle though so who am I to talk.....

I didn't realise you knew it so well. In my pomp I could drive the 3rd, 5th, 9th, 13th and 15th from white tees in Summer with a persimmon 3 wood and the Titleist ball of the day.

Haven't been there for a few years (about 10) so I'd have no idea what club to use on some of these holes now. Thats was the beauty of the common, played like a links in Summer and the ball would run for miles. The only problem with th e3rd and 5th were the bloody horse paths in front of the greens which would stop the ball dead (and you'd then have to drop on an invariably bare lie).

Homer: Wasn't really trying to impugn your ability...

I work not far away, and a bunch of us (sort of ex-work-related) have an annual visit every autumn. Normally play from the Scottish side though (Don't know why, we just do?). If you've not been for about 10 years, you'll find it's not so much the horse rides: there's so many dog-walkers now, ball much more likely to be stopped by a pile of dog-5h1t. Still love the place on a misty but sunny autumn morning.....

Twas ever the same. I knew you weren't sleighting my ability so need for any form of apology or explanation. I have played the 1st from Wimbledon Common (12th from the Scottish side) and actually had a family sitting on the bank of the green having a picnic. Kids were playing football on the green. When we pointed out it was a golf course and they were likely to get hit by a ball they said it was the only bit of decent grass for their kids to play on. Can't publish what our 4ball said but in the end we picked up their hamper for them and moved it onto the road.

It was always a problem with the public particularly on the tee at Queensmere and Paradise. I've been known to wait for 10 or so minutes just for a gap between walkers.

Still despite all that it was where I grew up golfing (and was assitant pro for a while) and so for all the hassles (no play on Sunday afternoons and public holidays, public etc). One of the perks of working in the shop was all the au pairs walking by with the kids. Use to always sit outside and chat them up (and the ladies from the stables in the village). With those fond memories I'm off to bed !!

Vicount and Minty, you will have to let me know when you are next going out at a weekend as I would certainly be up for a round.
