Why?

When did it creep into the game?

I cannot ever remember a tackle like this when I played.I have not played for about ten years but I honestly don't recall ever seeing one when I played!

What I do not understand is why the need to tackle like that?

Surely with 1 foot you have the opportunity to not only stop the guy your tackling but also take the ball you have won.

Drogba's tackle today was horrific.........dirty bloody animal.

Two footed tackles should get a months ban.

Its pure cowardness, every player who does it knows its a leg breaker,as you
say a longer ban should suffice.
I played when i was younger,it was not a two footed tackle, but i still have the two hole marks
that he put in my knee.

I had one of these in a local league about 12 years ago in a needle match, nigh on broke my ankle, I got sent off for punching him in the mouth after I had hobbled off and had it strapped up.

I got fined and he never! No justice

its something that we will see over and over again unfortunately.

I think the two footed tackle is a result of a player trying to do too much and losing the ball, then feeling pi**ed off they resort to a tackle to get the ball back and just lunge in... There is no need for it and it causing serious injury..

In the years I played I have never done a two footed tackle and never will, a normal one footed tackle gives us enough leg stretch to win the ball and have the control to push yourself back to your feet to get on with the game..

a lot of it is down to poor technique tbh, players dont need to lunge in, either stand em up if you cant win it or nip in if you can. Its an art and with this new breed of footballer I am afraid this has gone in most. All about being 6ft+, a good engine and quick

i play in the west yorkshire league on a saturday and you might see 1 every other month i also play in the leeds jubilee premier league on a sunday and i bet there is 1 ever other week ive been on the end of a few in my time but would never do it i love nothing more than going in hard for a 50/50 or even a 60/40 to them but thats me it should be severly punished eveen if the player does not get injures and the sooner it does the better

Its because the art of tackiling is being taken out of the game by FIFA. Even good old fashioned 50/50 one footed challenges tend to get blown for one way or another and so the art of getting the ball is being lost. I think it comes down to a misguided desire to try and win possession and I would say the vast majority ARE done without malice but it doesn't make them right or any less dangerous

Back in the 60's use to know a well known center half. Who played for a team who got hammers on sunday. He always said "This legs for the ball and this legs for the man". Ok there were no 2 footed lunges. But if they missed the ball, they made sure they got the man. Thats what all defenders did in those days.

Its become a development of the scissor tackle and the jump tackle and combined the 2. It is such a cowardly thing to do as its all of that persons weight going through the challenge theres no give if a players foot is on the floor. I have been lucky to avoid any bad challenges usually being able to jump them and usually try and land on them if they do it then they dont do it again. In the local leagues its awful as refs are scared to send players off and report such things. Which is why I dont wish to play local league football anymore. Would rather the extra travelling and play with 3 decent officials at a decent standard.

Only experienced it once, over 30 years ago, and I ended up with a hole that left the shin bone showing. Two days later it was still bleeding, and the discussion was whether or not to take the leg off. That was the end of that season.

I'm biased but I'd vote for a 10 match ban.

Having had my not so illustrious carrer (word casualy used) virtualy ended by one mate it is a vicious tackle & player should be banned until the injured party is back playing & the club of the offender should pay the injured players wages & expenses , all they care about is money so use that as a deterrant.. had my leg ankle& foot cracked by a tackle when i was 28, i did get back playing nearly 7/8 months later, but i had piled on the weight & never got proper fit again , never had confidence in my kicking again so i drifted away from the kickboxing aswell , became a good swimmer tho .. was never going to be a world beater at either sport but when i retired shouldnt have been decided by some muppet .. (other than myself :D) ..

Alan Hutton deserves a ban for that tackle on Shane Long , where do lunges like that belong in football... also i dont buy into the "it was a real centre forward tackle" or "he not that type of player" forward or back, dirty or clean player ban them for reckless tackles

Ramble ramble ramble. Take your hooped pyjamas off, even from someone who hates the old farm with an equal passion Hutton is a very solid player.

I would never condone it but I think the game had got so fast, skilful and players have become so much stronger in the last 10 years that it's so easy to miss time a tackle now and for it to end up a nasty one. Obviously Drogbas tackle on Sunday was just plain stupid and was out of frustration but quite a few bad tackles just can't be helped due to the speed of the game now.

"Can't be helped"? Surely any player can stop themselves from leading with two feet and their studs up?

But I agree that if someone goes in for a tackle and inadvertently catches a player, it's usually just mis-timed or the victim being too quick for the tackler.

Just to add as well it is likely to get worse as coaches at young level dont really teach tackling. You have passing shooting and some shape play. I have never seen a session designed for tackling an opponent properly which means tackling could get worse as the players get quicker.

Away Craw, the man is pish, seriously pish and my opinion has hee haw to do with the fact he used to play for the filth.

Solid? He has had a new arse hole ripped in the last half dozen games he has played for us!

Drogba's was a "s**t out" tackle and totally deserved a red merely becasue it is a coward's way of "tackling" (if that's the right description?). If you look at it, he basically sits down on the floor and pokes his legs out. Wasn't going to snap anyone in case he got hurt too

It's different to someone he flies in with all their weight and momentum going through the tackle which can do all sorts of damge.

Both are red cards IMO, the second example should be boardering on assault.
