The Tinkerman..

Through a relatively lengthy process of trial and error I seem to have established that the modern, low profile fairways are not suited to my swing.
I struggle to get any real launch from them, which is what they're designed to do..distance is OK but 3/4 of it is roll which makes carrying a bunker a tad more tricky.
A bit of light reading has led me to slightly deeper faced fairways...think Mizuno ST against Callaway Elyte.....the CG is a bit higher on the face and, as I hit slightly down with a fairway - even taking a small divot - the ball launches higher, carry is further and goes further overall...and I want a low bullet I can adjust a little and sweep it.....
More on this later....

Interesting, that. I always figured the taller faces were for people who use them off the tee more than the ground. My old Cobra F9s had quite a tall face, and also rails underneath, but the Pings I have now are shallower-faced and I seem to hit them fine either way. But I wouldn't say I have a downward angle of attack with woods like you do. Off the tee I use the lowest castle tees as I do with all clubs that aren't driver, so it's effectively no different to hitting it off the deck. If I used anything higher I'd have a chance of skying it.

Don't put any weight on what my swing does to a golf ball........I can do exactly the opposite of what's meant to happen...🤷‍♂️

I am afraid I have really been tinkering.. I was struggling to feel the club position in my swing so I measured the swingweight. Everything was C6, so I slapped on lead tape and moved it to C9 and went and hit balls. To be honest this was better by some margin. Now I have a load of lead tape splatted over all my irons. The reason I was at C6 is my grips are mids ( although I bought the clubs with MCC +4 mids - but looking back they always felt light). Now I am looking at my driver, I think that has moved from D1 to possibly C8 given the weight difference between the original grip and the MCC+4 mid. I will measure it tomorrow but if I need to put the lead tape on, it will have to be the front of the head because my launch is high.

I have gone to Winn Dri Tac grips they weigh 50 g the same as a standard OEM grip.

Measured my driver this morning, swingweight was C6 same as the irons had been. I had lost myself a little after adjusting the irons. I have checked the weight difference between the mid grips I have and I think there is roughly 4-5g difference. Which would help. I have added 5-6g of lead tape on the sole which has taken the swingweight to D0-1. I put it a little forward but not significantly so and mainly on the centre line, as I don’t want too much going on. I will hit balls this afternoon to see if it all works well… I do have the margin to raise my loft as I am currently at the lowest setting.

I was looking at them last night. To be honest I am a lambkin cross line or std golf pride fella … very vanilla in my grip choices ☹️ ..

Oh jeez, this swing weight/grip weight difference chat scares me, something else to blame when I hit a crap shot with my newly gripped wedges and fairways!

Don’t panic … mine were well skewed due to the lightness of the shafts and my preference for fat grips with extra tape ..

Hit some balls with the weighted driver , all seems okay 👍 … tomorrow is monthly medal day so it’s a baptism of fire 😳

Thought I’d use this thread as I’m not Tinkering anymore instead it’s Reconstruction.

After not only yesterday’s shambles but the complete inconsistency that’s appeared in My game, I took myself to the range. Ball striking was abysmal to start with straight pulls, hooks and high right weak slappy shots. Got the camera out and filmed a few OMG all I can say is my swing has completely disappeared 😳

When I compared it side by side to my swing 3 weeks ago it could not be more different! Usually stay in my posture pretty well and maintain plane with more of an arc and body rotation drives everything, not anymore today in every video it showed takeaway is outside, steep upright plane, right leg completely straightens, standing up in the back swing losing all posture with really high hands and disconnected flying right arm, not only all of that the tempo was so much faster and jerky with absolutely no swing arc. Then came the down swing which was even steeper than than back swing, early extension, and having to throw the hands to get any sort of contact as I’m just not rotating the body at all so inevitably when the hands pass the body I get the hooks and the odd occasion where I fight it and don’t let the hands pass I’m getting that weak right shot.

Literally at a loss for words as to how different my swing is to 3 weeks ago. I can’t even figure out what the feels are that have changed ! Think it could be another at least month before I go on the course and instead it’ll be practice ground only until I have those repeatable patterns back instead of fighting myself. Genuinely looks like 2 different people swinging 😭

Apart from that is everything else ok😂

It happens to us all, even the pros.
I find a little rest helps.

My chipping and puttings good 😂

I sent the video to a pal who’s been a Pro for nearly 30years and were juniors together. His reply “might as well give up never seen your swing that bad” 😂

I had 10’days of and that’s what I’ve come back to. Might take up chess 😂
