Today I've arranged to meet the vice captain at the club house to discuss the marketing I'm doing for the club. He called me about 3pm to arrange it. Of course I said yes, it's on y way home from work, pop in quick beer and catch up. However, it's just dawned on me that I'm at work, wearing shoes, smart shirt and JEANS! Which is fine, I'm business casual I'd say. Neat and tidy, not scruffy, some nice dark wash denim jeans. So I now have to either go home to get some trousers or arrange to meet him elsewhere. Pointless and the club will lose out on drinks we would of bought.

not anywhere I've worked :)

just use the spike bar and put £1 in the captains charity box

under the circumstances I can't see it causing a problem at your club at all, as it wouldn't at mine, in such a situation.

Waterproofs not allowed. No spike bar. Just checked with the secretary before going up to the bar and he's said there's a few funny ones up there wait outside I'll go check. Looks like we're going to the pub. Ridiculous! Maybe I won't help out doing the marketing to try drum up new members.

Some dress codes are nuts

You can get into my clubhouse dressed in the following footwear with no socks wearing a pair of shorts and a polo shirt

but not with these shoes despite there being golf shoes almost identical to them

Played today with guy we'd met in NZ and his wife joined us afterwards for a coffee and she was wearing jeans which aren't allowed.
Nobody said anything and the Lady Captain even came over and said hello and didn't say anything, doubt she noticed to be frank.

One question I had about the dress code over the masters was what was Bernard Langers t-shirt! Its like something the pit crew wear at the Grand Prix!

Should this t shirt be allowed?bernard.jpg

I would just turn up in your jeans and apologize. Or the other option is to find the scruffiest old pair of faded cords you can and wear them as that is suitable attire to wear in the clubhouse.

I have lost count of the number of times I have had to go home to get changed before attending meetings at the club. Some of the dress codes are daft in these modern times, but I have to say I am largely in favour of them. The reason is that what ever code you specify, people will always push it "downwards". Smart denim today is a tatty old pair of jeans tomorrow and how do you "police" that?
"Sorry, you are wearing jeans"
"So are you"
"But my jeans are better than yours"
Thats why they always insist on collared shirts on the course. If they allowed shirts without collars someone would play in a hooters t shirt. At my club we did a survey which came out roughly 50% in favour of allowing denim in the bar, which is actually the worst result possible for the committee.

Oh dear here comes the great dress code debate for a change.

Whats it like in your club Adey? Nice clubhouse all be it maybe a tad dated in terms of decor and possibly locker room. Is the dress code pretty strict in terms of jeans etc or relaxed?

I liked your place, came across as a proper members club.

Ran by the members for the members. You saw that with that Steak and Kidney pudding hand made on the butchers down the road. None of this fancy posh nosh. The dress code is normal golf club rules, no jeans, collared t-shirts only etc etc. But they are pretty relaxed to be honest. you can get away with wearing jean style trousers, just as long as they are not blue denim.

I noticed Langer at the weekend , not so much the top but i think his trousers had a pocket on the side of the leg like chinos , my old club pulled me up for wearing trousers much like those. I also got a comment from the seniors captain about my turtle neck top , had Ping written on it in three places and he tried to tell me it was not golf clothing .

That is what annoys me at times regarding dress code. I do not suppose he said anything to the old boys that you always see in scruffy old faded trousers though. Smart turtle neck neck Ping top V scruffy old faded cords? Which would I prefer to see in the clubhouse?

Out of date rules made/applied by out of date minds.

What if I wore proper golf pants and shirts neatly tucked in but extra extra baggy? Would I be called out?

Christ by the sounds of it I would be shunned at some of your clubs.

i regularly wear bright trousers. Purple, orange and electric blue. I am a big fan of rickie fowler and his dress code.

My club is a bit more relaxed, but I do see people on the course with jeans and tracky bottoms. Sadly because its a council course this happens. But the dress code on the local rules say no jeans.

My club is very relaxed in the clubhouse and has made it clear to all members and locals (prospective social members) that jeans and trainers are allowed. The only things that are banned are track suits, hoodies and caps/hats.

Just look at the supplement in this months magazine, would you get away wearing clothes from the sporty or athletic pages in you clubhouse? If not then your club really need to move with the times
