Well not that strange, I just did a web-fitting by Ping online for some irons to see what dot I needed and thought I would try the driver, fairway and hybrid fitting and it said I needed a stiff shaft when the ones I have are regular!!

My usual problem is a fade on irons and a fade to slice on my driver, fairway and hybrid, I really have to slow my swing down to hit a straight ball when my natural instinct is my quicker swing speed which leads to low FIR been hit. When using my DWS Reg I have taken everything into consideration and no matter how slow I swing I end with a fade, if I go for it then it’s a slice.

Also on a similar note I tried my friends I5 irons this weekend and boy when a far better feeling than my FP's, they weren’t as flat and seemed far more forgiving.

Would a stiffer shaft help rid me of the fade?

Parmo,

I'm not sure what it is, but I manage to hit stiffer shafts in drivers straighter than reg's. My normal shot shape with a regular shafted driver is a fade\slice.

I can vouch for the I5's...great clubs...and I'm off around the same hcap as you.

Cool.. will do Bob.

I bought a 6 iron on EBay and got one of the grip trainers fitted to it, so no excuses then.

Any reason why Pings fitting would say I needed a stiff shaft?

They probably have gone with your swing speed.
If its fast, stiff shaft, but if your grip is wrong you will slice anything.
Have a look in a mirror, is your grip like the one below?

my left hand thumb is not central down the shaft though but slightly over to the right side of the grip forcing the right hand more right

So when you look in the mirror, you can see part of your left thumb?
Sounds as if you have whats known as a 'strong' grip which normally hits a draw or hook.
My guess is in your effort not to hit a hook, your hands dont release the club properly, leaving it open at impact causing the fade or slice.
Go and see your pro and have a chat with him.
He should suggest to weaken your grip like the above picture, then try and hit a hook. You should find it going straight.
HTH :D
