Can anyone make any sense of this or has anyone experienced anything similar.
This has been going on for some time..

Whenever I attempt to warm up in a net before a round without fail I shank most of the irons.
I steer clear of the nets now because of this.
Also,at the range the same happens, I'd say at the moment and for some time 50-60% of iron shots = a shank.

So range and Nets Its Shanksville...

But on the course I never shank the ball!!

I'm hoping to get a lesson at some point during the week but wondered if anyone on here had experienced anything similar?
Why am I only shanking it at the range/net?

I hazard a guess. Your practice swing on the range and in the nets, finds you forcing yourself to swing the club as you think you swing it on the course - and not actually how you do swing it. And where you have a fault in your swing (and we all have faults) and you are unlucky enough to have a fault that is of a type that nearly causes the shank - by forcing your swing you exaggerate that fault and you shank it.

I could have written that question!
Except that I also occasionally shank on the course, that sounds a bit rude, interested to see the replies.

I used to do this what I found was because of the confined space I was standing to near the ball. I had to force myself to use all the space I had and not worry about hitting the supports or find one without supports so to speak. Another thing that helps was to start my warm up with a hybrid or a 7 wood.

Same with me and practice grounds in general.

I've walked into the first tee at trump 3 times now having shanked about 50-100 balls, it's not the best preparation :D

Like I said the other day this happened to me last week for the first time, all I could hit was hosel rockets with every iron when I was warming up and didn't happen on the course. Was bricking myself over the first iron shot I had right enough!

That said, the way I hit my irons on Sunday shanks might have been an improvement

I had this same issue when I first started with nets.

Then one day someone was standing behind me and asked by I was aligning so strangely.

I was using the mat and the net straight lines to align subconsciously and I was all crossed over. I wasn't actually aiming at anything either.

I picked a point to aim at, threw down two clubs and aligned to them, back to hitting it out there the middle.

Nets issue cured.

I once shanked every one of a whole basket of practice balls on the range before a competition. Went out with no confidence in my swing whatsoever, but won the Comp with not even a hint of a shank! Mind you, I've done it the other way round and hit perfect shots on the range, but then shanked everything out on the course!

Some interesting things to try out, Thanks.
Ive tried all sorts tbh, standing closer/further, Addressing the ball in different positions etc, putting the basket beyond the ball.

Its been happening for years but at the moment I'm trying to bed some new irons in and it isn't really happening due to me shanking every other ball and looking like a right Chopper at the range :o

You've done well to get it out of your head there before teeing off.
When I've suffered with it before a comp my head is mush by the time I'm on the 1st, it usually takes 5-6 holes to regain some confidence in what I'm doing.

If it happens at the range and the practise net, I think it could be something to do with your alignment. You could be subconsciously aligning to the bay as opposed to your target. Put two sticks down and try to ignore where the bay/net points. Also, when I've had a dose of the unmentionables, I stand quite open (like im going to hit an exaggerated fade) and swing down the target line. As im stood open, I have more room to turn through. This is just something that has worked for me in the past so thought id share.

Good luck....not that you need it....you spanked us on Sunday :)

I hit a good tee shot on the 1st hole and played well for the rest of the round. I didn't do anything special to get the shanks out of my head. I might have just had no expectations of winning, and just kept my head down and swung the club. There is no logic to these things! :mmm:

I hit them a lot more at the range than I ever do on the course.

My swing is that flat I do sometimes clonk the pole behind me. It could be as mentioned above I am not addressing and swinging as I do in an open field.

Or theory 2. There is only a brief second to the see the ball in the air in a net. Our heads look up earlier than they would hitting out into a field. I always catch my head cocked to the left as I make contact with the hozzel. I never actually see the contact with a shank as I am already up looking for the ball.

I'm also more prone to shanking in nets or at the range than on the course.

I immediately swap to some swings with my 5-wood if I shank anything when practicing...then work my way back down the irons from 4 to PW.

I'm still suffering, been 10 months now. Had my last lesson then got injured. So not been able to practice that apart from once.

That was a positive. But my ankle has reacted to just hitting 2 dozen balls :(

That is a carbon copy of me apart from the fact I've had 3 spells over 3 years where they've transmitted to the course too.

I am desperate to improve and have the time to practice too but I can't go anymore as I'm scared of the place.
There wasn't nerves or apprehension before which could have led to it but there is now.
So much so that twice this year after excellent rounds I went straight up to the range from the 18th and immediately started shanking.

I can't offer any suggestions or help I'm afraid, sorry.

I'd also like to add that it doesn't matter what range I'm at. It could be a standard range with mats/beams, etc., or it could be a grass one or even just practicing.
It's just practicing anywhere for me where they occur.
