I've noticed that this year more than any recent ones 'the rough' seems brutal.

Not the really deep stuff but just off the fairway 2nd cut I'm banging on about. And not just at ours either but practically everywhere I've played this season.

It seems deep thick and clinging with the barely visible ball falling into the bottom of nasty cuppy wire wool lies.

It's killing me and just wonder if I'm the only one to perceive this.

I'm assuming that it's down to the wet and warm growing conditions we've had through last month.

I hates it I tells yah! 👀

I suspect it is weather related. It cost me 4 balls last night, each of which only just made it into the rough but were completely devoured. It seems more than harsh to lose balls when you are only just off the fairway but that is the way at the moment. I have played the same courses, my own as well obviously, at other times and they are not like this so that indicates a theme.

Like you, I will be happier when the rough is back under control, it is just annoying and slows down the game at the moment.

You aren't alone. Our semi has been at least a half shot penalty and at times been tough to find it. It was cut a degree. For the club champs but still hard to lay club on ball. Miss that into the real deep stuff and it's reload every time and chances of finding it about 1/10

I spoke to our pro about this after I played another course and he said it was down the the fact that greenkeepers couldn't get out and cut the stuff due to the weather.

Yes warm and wed conditions, perfect for the rough.

ours is the worst ive seen it at my club. we have the long wispy fescue on top but the bottom of that is lush grass some placed its so thick you cannot see below the knee, let alone your shoes. Balls that miss the fairway now are lost. Ive never seen so many people in the rough, we are an out and back links and petty much every group we could see on Sat were searching in the rough. its had a knock on effect on the pace of play, adding at least half an hour to the round.

The club has bought a new type of mower that will pick the cut grass up and scarify the ground at the same time, so the long fescue grows but not the lush stuff in furture. this is getting done after the home internationals two weeks time

June has been the wettest month since Nov 14, so says our greenkeeping newsletter, thankfully we don't really have any rough

Lol, finding it was a miracle, getting out it would be cause to contact the Vatican.

The semi is so lush the ball sits down in it and you can't see the top until you're practically standing on it, suffice to say it's difficult to do anything but punt it forward for fear that you have no clue how it's coming out. It's made play quite testing at times particularly in high winds but hopefully the relatively dry/hot conditions recently will start thinning it out.

Our issue is that Natural England have designated a lot of the course as an area of special scientific interest so they're not allowed to touch the rough. I laugh when someone commented on how bad it was at Troon - Troon's rough was a dream compared to this!

Man I picked the wrong year to change everything :)
