I abhor the endless advertising of gambling websites when watching golf on Sky. It's relentless and sickening; in particular the disingenuous and sanctimonious faux "bet responsibly" messages at the end of each advert. Have the marketing snoopers identified that the average golf fan is a sad muppet with a compulsive betting addiction?

These money-grabbing corporations pretending to offer us the opportunity to take money from them, whist cracking on that they really only have nothing but our best interests at heart, are nothing short of vomit-inducing.

Because on-line gambling is extremely profitable for the bookmakers and they can afford the prime time advertising! :mmm:

Of course the reason for it is totally obvious. However it's the sickening cynicism of the tone of the adverts (you can take us to the cleaners but please don't overstretch yourself in terms of your own financial circumstances as, hey, we really only care for your welfare and don't really want to take your money from you) that makes me sick.

It's an advert designed to make people part with their money in order to increase the profits of the company, in the same way that every advert for every product does. American Golf advertise on Sky, I'm fairly sure they don't have the benefit of our game at heart when they try to sell us the latest gear.

I think the gamble responsibly bit is a legal requirement

Perfectly true. However I'm unaware of any support organisations such as:

"Compulsive purchasers of golf gear from superstores anonymous"

Aso the sheer number of betting website ads in any one ad break is, for me, the issue here.

Why shouldn't betting companies be allowed to advertise?

Personally i hate barry scott and cillet bang !

only kidding, the YGT adverts really grind on me

Top post mate.....I also can't stand the sheer volume of betting ad's......." Bad Betty" indeed!!

Agree on Carly Baker

ooooffffff

However watching the relentless onslaught of Bingo, Casino, online slots and in play etc etc just makes me feel really sad.

Similarly with Cash for injuries, PPI, Payday loans adverts that are on during the day.... i just (without wanting to sound like a prat) think society has gone up the swanny.

The whole thing is about something for nothing. The complete antithesis of what made this country what it is (was). Or a least how we used to portray ourselves.

It's not just golf though is it...its just sport, You watch football and that's full of betting adverts. At least with golf there is no massive RayWinstone head flying about....grrr that one drive me mad....what a....

I agree with Jonny, people don't get addicted to buying cillit bang or new golf clubs (well, not everybody). Gambling is addictive and destroying to some people.

Could have got a job with Ladsbroke but couldn't reconcile myself to work for a business that exploits the many with a gambling addiction and makes their life and that of their families a misery. I find the volume of ads a bit disconcerting and not happy that the idiot Doncaster who is somehow still in charge of Scottish league football is chuffed with himself for securing a major sponsorship deal with Ladsbroke.

I don't like them but have got so used to them I really don't watch them at all. They have an opposite effect on me, I'm less inclined to bet having been subjected to how desperate they are for my money, jus like the charity adverts! Anyway, I'm going to cash out of the thread now

Likewise - but we are not the primary target of the ads - for that very reason.

Also agree they are not good. Trouble is that it is so easy to bet now where as before you needed to make an effort. And on average very few people end up in profit. And if heavily promoting the opportunity to bet in play on the number of corners or time of first yellow card by the simple click of a button on your pc or tablet is not encouraging some kind of addiction to it, then I don't know what is.

I do think we are sleepwalking into a big problem. Great for the betting industry that sponsor a lot of sporting events and teams, not so great for society.

Ah but HK - the apologists for the gambling industry will tell us that its the feckless individual and those with no willpower to resist who are responsible for their own actions
