As you step onto the green....

- you step back, line it up.
- You take about 3 practice moves
- you think about the line
- you think about the pace
- you think about a nice smooth swing and hitting through the ball
- you think about keeping your legs still
- you think about not looking up until after you hit it

Then I go really stiff and screw it up !!!

I think I have been completely wrapping myself up in knots on the green just lately with so many thoughts and routines. So the other day, I had a change of thought process and routine, it went.....

"so, I just need to hit this ball over there and get it in that hole "

Amazing, especially for the 3-4 foot putts which you slam in all day on the practice green !! Not sure it will work everytime though !!

There is a fine line between taking too long and over analysis that leads to a miss and the slap dash this is just a simple tap in approach. The middle ground produces the best results.

If your natural putting stroke is repeatable, consistent and accurate then this approach can work.
Think of throwing a ball underarm to someone 10 ft away. Do you think about the length of your backswing, how much wrist cock you have and at what point you let the ball go?
Of course not because you do it naturally.
With putting, you should strive to be able to putt naturally without to much technical stuff in your head. Some people are lucky to be able to do it naturally. The rest of us have to practice it until it becomes an easy thing to do. :)
Unfortunately, some people can't throw a ball :(

Too much thinking going on

Look at it
Pick the line
Hit the putt.

Go on instinct - you'll be better than you expect.

I totally agree. Imagine throwing the ball towards the hole. You'd get it close every time without having to analyse the technique and biomechanics.

Welcome to Dr Bob Rotella's world.
It's freaky isn't it? It will feel a bit out of control but try it on long putts also, you might feel pleasantly surprised!

Read his book, Putting out of your mind. Quite an eye opener.

What's the easiest way to film and then download?

There are a few ways to do it.
To film....
3 swings would be great. One from face on, one from down the line behind and one from in front.
Most folks have video in their mobbys, so that would be the easiest. Or cam-corder
Send the videos to your computer using a transfer cable, memory card or bluetooth.
Then, either send me the vids directly attaching them to an email or get a you tube account (free) post them on there and send me the link.
You will find my contact details here
