Now I appreciate it's a little pedantic but it never ceases to amaze me how many people refer to a Medal score by saying "Medal today, 40 points".....
Points are for Stableford and, although your handicap is worked out using a basis of Stableford, your Medal score is the number of shots you take minus your handicap.
Stableford and Medal are different formats of strokeplay so to refer to a Medal score as a number of points is just wrong.

Thank You...

I'm a relatively new club golfer and even I know the difference between the two. Never yet been able to say '40 points' for anything mind...

Was just about to post about my first win and was going to say the same thing.

Today I was announced as the winner of our society medal with 41 points, no mention of the net 61 -83 gross. Happy as I can be but I found it very odd.

whilst I appreciate what you are getting at I can't help pointing out that the original 'medals' were Spring and Autumn meetings played as matchplay.......the term Medal, and Monthly medal, tend to have followed on from that and many clubs issue 'medals' to the winners (whether competed for in medal or stableford or even par formats :))

You're welcome.......... :)

no-one in my world does it either, seems to be a forum thing, hadn't come across it till I joined here, medal strokeplay is proper golf, anything else is just a bit of fun.

Bang on. You can get away with murder in stableford. Theres no stableford qualifying comps at our club anyway, its medal or bust.

Some of us were working!!
Gramps!!:ears:

It's just something I've seen on here a few times and noticed elsewhere as well.

And 80 is about what I'm shooting around at the moment.
But there's always tomorrow!

Not working two days in a row then. Have a good one.

Guy did it at the turn yesterday after nine holes........."I've got you down for 43" I say........"20 points" he says......."no....43" I reiterate....".it's a medal"......."oh OK, ....I make you 18 points"............"no .....39", I reply exasperated shaking my head......

He goes on...." I thought it was Stableford?" .......... "No, it's called the weekly medal....has been for over 4 years".

This is the same guy I played with last week with his mate, they were both in a buggy swapping cards on the 1st tee........" Are you in the medal" I asked them......."yes" was the reply...........

"You can't play the medal in a buggy".............." But we've already entered it".................. "Tough...... You can't play in the medal"

So now he's peed off at me as if I made the rule :o........ I just wonder how many times they've played a comp before in a buggy........

You can't make this stuff up.....

There's a lot of people who don't seem to be able to play ANY round of golf without there being some kind of stableford applied to it if it's stroke play or some kind of gross score if it's matchplay..

eg: I lost 5&4 today and was only 2 over
Shot an 89 today..with only 1 blob ..... for 35pts
