Apparently there is one club in every golfers bag that he cannot fully hit properly... Only problem for me is that the phantom club moves around inbetween rounds.

I played recently and it was my usually reliable sandwedge. Bare ground, thick grass or sutting perfectly, I just kept thinning shots into oblivion?

Does anyone else suffer from the phantom club syndrome? (

No more biscuit jokes please!!!)

I'd have to say mine is the 4iron although i've started hitting that well lately.

As a general rule if i'm hitting my 8iron, 9iron, pw and sw well then rest assured i wont be striking my 5, 6, and 7 irons well, and vice versa.

Also if i'm driving the ball well i generally wont putt well and vice versa.

I dont know why this is that case but it definitely seems to be the pattern.

It's my 6 iron. I move between 5 hybrid and 7 iron and never think about my 6 which is quite a good club. My distances are inconsistent which might explain it.

I'd have thought a phantom club would have been one you could feel there but wasn't... i.e. a ghost club

You know, like the person who has a limb chopped off but can still feel it there.

The only phantoms in my bag are the ones in my head, my own inner demons getting into my game.

I had a few lessons in 1995 (long time ago Dave?) and commented on how badly my 7 iron seemed to go. I'd been getting odd shots for ages????
The pro looked at the lie and face angle (with his gadgets) and discovered it was not even close to the original spec.
10 minutes later, it was like new.

(yawn, yawn, Dave?)

Although I realised it was the club, I get more nervy with 7 irons and just the sight of 7 on the sole of the club sends paranoid phantoms into my head.

Mine is when I suddenly realise that I have used my 6 iron twice and am about to use it again. 'Tis devilish arkward

Just have off days, I never look at any problem by creating a reason that probably isnt there. if you see it there in your mind you can nearly guarantee it will be there in your game. If you have a phantom club as you call it, its because you have put it there.

My SW, It just doesn't sit right on the fairway faor some reason. Any shots at 80 yards are now a gripeddown gap wedge for me. I will only use the SW out of the bunker.

Nope, I can hit every club in the bag.

I have a bogey hole though. 16. A blind par 3. 180 yards. Stand on the tee, and my mind goes blank.

I know what you mean, I use a PW for a lot of shots as I loft a SW a lot with my normal swing and only get between 60 and 70 unless I spank it or change my swing and address. I have got so used to using a PW at many distances from 110 downwards. My SW is rarely used out of the bunker.

You won't be the only one with this issue.

I only use my SW for 80-85 yards and probably not at all unless there is a bunker in the way. All my old mates (mostly 6-16 h'caps) use a straightforward 1/2 or 3/4 wedge instead. It's a bounce thing, most PWs/GWs sit tight to the turf, SW's are less confidence inspiring.

I played with a young chap a while back at a posh/good
course. He hit his driver MILES and kept leaving all sorts of 50-100 yrd shots. I gave him the yardage every hole (I had the only score-saver) and he kept putting his SW back in the bag and creating something with his GW. We got to one hole, it was his 3rd to a par 5........I said "88-ish to clear the bunker, about 95, maybe 100 to the pin".

He said, "great, I can hit my SW 95 yards all day" and then proceeded to drop the ball 5 yards over the bunker and stop dead for a tap in (6") birdie".......

One of the best live moments I've ever witnessed. His SW never came out again.....just goes to show.....

9 iron for me I can hit my 8 miles but my pw goes just over 100 yards so I get a bit stuck at that in-between range.

Just don't feel comfortable with it in my hands I seem to hit my wedges differently from my other irons (8 upwards) and I just can't seem to decide how to hit a 9.

9 Iron, just an epic failure golfing ability when i'm holding it, hoever i know that the problem is only in the head, in theroy. ;)
