Ok so you are asked to recommend a set of irons for the following handicap categories what would you recommend for...

19-28 HC range?
10-18 HC range?
Single figures?

Or would you break down the handicap range further?

I've found that the following works for any handicap:

Whatever feels comfortable. :)

You cant narrow it down to handicap ranges....
A player could have a wicked short game but a very average iron play ability... And still play off low double figures...

Likewise you could have a high handicapper with a pretty decent swing but a crap short game...

No such thing as one set fitting into any category. One of Smiffy's mates at Blackmoors had a set of £6.99 JJB Sports specials bought on a club by club basis and he still hit them as well as Smiffy's I15 and my TM TP and plays off 11. I know low single figures playing big cavity backs and mid 20 handicappers perfectly happy and capable of hitting R9 TP's, X22 tours etc. It is about what you are happy with.

Granted most players could benefit from a C/F session to find optimum clubs for their game but is it truly necessary when all you want to do is play, maybe try and win the monthly stableford, and have some fun along the way

Ping g15s.

In my opinion (sketchy obviously) most people try to play irons that are totally unsuited to a handicapped golfer, so much so that many pro's would baulk at playing them.

Hence g15s for every one.

And I would quit.

Interesting comments so far which perhaps blows the manufactures classification of SGI, GI and players irons theory out of the water? Not to sure myself, if i was to recommend a set of blades to a 28 HC then i think i would need my head testing, regardless of their standard of swing or am i being too short sighted?

Ok, I will play the game.......

G15's for higher
Mp60's for 10-19
Ping Anser Irons for single figures....... Nearly went for callaway prototypes......

Why??

I took up this game back in the late 70s. The only iron available was a blade. From a blade I got a repeatable swing that I made my own.

If the 28 h/c is learning the game then what he uses doesn't matter. Seve learnt the game with a bladed 3 iron!

In the late 70s you didn`t really have a choice, with what is out there at the moment i can`t see why anybody would recommend a bladed club oppose to the SGI and GI products. Just because you had a black and white TV in the 70s and got on fine doesnt mean to say that you would recommend someone buying one now.

If you can get a solid repeatable swing that squares the clubface at impact consistantly then you can use anything. I just do not see any club helping a donkey of a swing regardless of how much perimiter weighting it has nevermind the manufacturers blurb. For me the right shaft is the most important part of the club you can put anything on the end of the right shaft for you.

The TV screen analogy is OK but it's irrespective of ability.

I believe that if you're learning the game then it doesn't matter what you use as your main aim is to get 'your' swing.

Once you've got 'your' swing then you'll know what clubs feel right - be they blade, cavity or combo.

Interesting. (well, a little anyway :D)

H'cap alone is not not always an indicator for suitability.

My pairs partner couldn't use my Callaways, although he could do with the forgiveness.... :o (sorry mate), the balls would come down with snow on. :D

I can hit irons sweet, woods I suck and putting I suck as much if not worse

I reckon I could hit blades fine given a week or 2 to get used to them

its the driver and round the greens that differ imho

Drawboy,
I'm new to this forum but notice your listing JPX 800's for irons. Can i ask how you get on with them? i got a new set custom fitted 4 months ago and i'm really struggling with them, i'm tempted to go back to my old irons, but it could just be between the ears, don't seem to have any control of the wedge in particular when around the green, the ball seems to come off the face like a rocket. I'd appreciate your opinion.

Burner 2.0 for the high chap
Mp53 inbetween chap
Titleist mb for the single figure chap.

Are you being serious?

Burner 2.0 and MP53 don't register in the game improvement catagory.

Taylor Made don't actually make any GI clubs, not now, not ever.

mp53 for 10 + h'cap, think thats quite a good recommendation.
the burner 2.0, why not, have you seem them? they look like shovels to me!

As you state in your post, handicap is not an idicator for suitability!

I had a set of tm rac lt2 irons when I was off 19, and got down to 12 with them, they are def not a sgi, but they worked for me.
