Just got back from the oxfordshire after playing 36 holes as part of a weekend in that neck of the woods, have to say the course was awesome! Not played a huge amount of top courses but it beats the likes of forest of Arden, Moortown, and the roxburghe.

The course is playable for all handicaps and nowhere near as tough as some of the reviews make it out. Some brilliant holes, the best being the 8th and 17th both being played around one of the lakes. Brilliant service all round in the hotel and pro shop too.

That style course makes a nice change, any other suggestions of anywhere similar, preferably more north

Not as lot further north - but I played one of the courses at The Warwickshire last year for nowt - always helps :) as mate is a member - and that's good. Very 'American' and 'country club' so not really the sort of club or course for me - but thoroughly enjoyable.

17th at the oxfordshire is my current fav hole i have played. played it 3 times, 3 different ways, and still only managed a 6... I WILL birdie that hole one day. i know how to, its just doing it!

I managed it yesterday which was nice, drove down left of main fairway, lie wasn't good enough to go for it, so took the sensible 7 iron to a wedge lay up and nailed the 15footer I was left with :) definitely on my list of fave holes now too.

Will have a look at the Warwickshire for another trip swingslikehogan, I'm thinking rockcliffe hall may a good shout for up here in the north east, wasn't sure about it before but looking at it again there are some similarities although not quite the same style.

Its a good track, Ive played it a few times in pro am's and also last Oct when 18 of us went up there for a weekend. Good hotel and staff but v expensive for a sausage roll and beer was over £4!!!!!! but hey made up for it with quality food in the evening. Even gave us our own dining room!!! The course is excellent. Weather was different over 2 days so its like playing two complete different courses. Used to host the B&H mastesr or what not a few years back. Some good names been there and played it. Worth a trip for sure.

I remember watching the Benson & Hedges International there a few times (on TV, I hasten to add!). It looked a bit exposed/windy, IIRC.

Went to watch it went Monty won it and its was breezy all day and sunny, didn't realise how warm it was though and got burnt to bits. Great 17th hole but rest of the course just seemed average.

It is indeed!i played in in Jan this year and it was brass monkeys and blowing a gale.. horrible weather but still great!

Oxfordshire is one of my favourite courses and i have played it a number of times. In the winter they always do £100 4balls even at weekends, absolute bargain. I would recommend people get on there email list to receive great deals like this.

With regards to the quote above, you must have played it on a still day because it can be extremely tough! I played there in the BB&O Mid-Age amateur championships on bank holiday monday. I played with a +3 handicapper who played his nuts off and shot +7 for two rounds! I shot +3 in the afternoon with a double on 17 and it was easily my best ever round despite other rounds under par.

SSS for both round was 76! The wind was comfortably 25mph the whole round and my understanding is that this is its main protection.

Cant say i enjoyed hitting 5iron into the135yd par 3 13th with with water on the left and the wind hard into your face!

anyway, enough of the rambling about my golf.

Fantastic golf course, not liked by the traditionalists, but worth a visit!

Our work society played in January. Loved the course, played rubbish. On the 8th I had 120yds to go over water, blowing a gale, dumped 2 balls in the water with a 6 iron, ballooned in the air. Want to play it again.

We where lucky with the weather average about 10mph with gusts of 16+ so I imagine a bit tame for such an open course, we also had the right direction with the wind on our backs, or sheltered for the shots I imagine would be very tough in high winds. Playing the 11th with water all down the right was a bit hairy as the wind came into play the most on this hole.

Well be back for sure at some point, top notch venue, won't be going back to the halfway house mind! £4.40 for a bottle of peroni, otherwise the hotel prices where no different to those elsewhere, forest pines etc. Thame seemed a decent night out and plenty of bars and restaurants, was very quiet on Sunday night though.
