I know it's traditional that day 3 and 4 are played as two-balls but isn't it a huge disadvantage to Edfors that he has to play solo?

Wouldn't it have made more sense, and be more fair, to play the first group as a three-ball at 8:40, then start the next at 9:00?

Not at all.
Sergio did this a few years ago and played round in about 2 hours with a marker, put in a good number for a reasonable cheque then got out of there before the crowds!

I always thought that the club sends a scratch golfer out to play with him? so keep the speed similar if that occurs?

Edfors has finished with a good round of 72 and is +6. He will certainly not be first out tomorrow.

The wind is getting stronger and stronger here at Turnberry. With a mouth watering leaderboard it promises to be a fascinating afternoon. After Calcavecchia’s fantastic press conference I have really warmed to him. Hopefully we will see Watson, Fisher and Calc still near the top come the end of the day.
