Obviously currently the Open Rota only includes links courses

I'm guessing this has prob been discussed to death but with the amount of top quality courses around and inside our shores should that rota be extended to include other types of courses - parkland , heathland etc ?

I personally would like to see other courses included into the rota

No.

Golf started on links and the Open is the oldest competition and has always been played on links. It should remain that way.

Why not, there's plenty of courses good enough to hold the open, it shouldn't be just played on links courses.the games moving on

Why would you like to see other types of courses?

The fact that it is on Links courses is what makes the Open, well, the Open!

Because I think we have a lot of great courses that could provide a great test for golfers -me have more than just links courses in the country and would be nice to see the Open move to a Walton Heath or a Berkshire or a Belfry or Woburn etc - yes the game was started on a links course and no issues with tradition but can't see why we can see the Open also played on other types of courses

Tradition is what makes the Majors surely though?

Would you move the Masters from Augusta?

I know we have plenty of top quality inland courses but it wouldn't be The Open if it wasnt on a links.

I think there is/was ample opportunity to host plenty of events on the great inland courses in the UK but no sponsorship has put paid to that. It wasn't so long ago there were four or five tour events in Britain. The Open though has always been a links event and should continue to do so.

Well said this man

Some things you just don't mess with.

Well I don't believe the masters should be a major based on it being so closed and only on one course but that's a different

It's still the Open regardless of what course it would be on - it's still a major on these shores.

Yes it's always been a links but is that a written rule or an unwritten rule ? Does it have to stay on a links course

I like to see the open on a links course purely because it's not something we see on a weekly basis. It creates a different challenge to the players, the one who adapts best is usually the winner. Different game to the normal bomb it and wedge it.

Playing The Open on a Links course is what makes The Open special.
Move it to a Wentworth/Belfry etc and it just becomes another Tour event.
Nothing wrong with hosting other events at Parkland/Heathland courses but leave The Open where it is.
It doesn't need to move.

the open had to be dragged kicking and screaming to portrush. there is no chance is will be held at a non-links. :swing:

It's tradition, no rules. As I said that is what makes all of the Majors. Without that its another regular Tour event for a bigger prize pot.

This will end up in one of you're never ending arguments so I'll bow out.

Argument ?! No one is arguing over anything

It simply wouldn't be The Open if it wasn't on a Links course.
I also think the players like the different challenges they're up against.
If it ain't broke....

Pretty much what I said. I can remember when there were a number of tour events in England (notwithstanding the Welsh, Scottish and Irish opens) but how many are there now aside from the tour flagship event the BMW. Its not a good state of affairs but no sponsors means no golf. These events use to be played on some great courses and so if the economics change and money comes in then hopefully this will happen again
