So, following the news (or lack of it) from Abu Dhabi who do you reckon should be captain for the Ryder Cup; Ollie or Sandy?

My vote would go to Ollie as him being more in touch with the younger guys. But will he want it as opposed to the possibility of him playing?

Can't see what Sandy Lyle could ever bring to the table as a Captain. If it rains will he just give up and concede the match?

I think Sandy's lack of respect for the Open last year may count against him. Also, he can't really be in touch with who's around at the moment - he spends all his time on his farm in Scotland doesn't he?

Except when he's walking off the course in a sulk.

Does anyone think Ollie will be able to play his way into the team given his health record in recent times? Make him Captain now.

I'm sure Ollie would command a lot more respect from the players than Sandy. I think Sandy's walk last year lost him the respect of a lot of people.

After what he did at the Open this year i'd have to say I never want Sandy to be the Captain of the Ryder Cup team. Its an honour to play in the open and if he just decides its too wet and can't be a*sed then he doesn't deserve to play in it ever again! 99% of golfers would give an arm and a leg to play in the Open!

Ollie is the man, not just because I don't like Lyle but because i think Ollie would get more respect from the players and would be able to get them fired up easier?!

I agree with the above Sandy should never have quit on the open, there where so many players who missed out but would have given their left (or right) nut to play in the open, and he basically slapped them all in the face!

I watched him playing in an event in the US last summer and he topped his 3 wood all of about 12 yards! Nice to see he's human but not a quality I'd want in my captain!

Looks like Monty's name is now being banded around quite seriously if Ollie doesn't get it. He would be my choice.

Either would be worthy of Captaincy,I'd love to see Big Eck get the chance and think Chemma would do a great job also.If piushed to pick next Captain I would ask Langer to do it again tho...

Im not trying to be disrespectful to Sandy Lyles achievements in golf but it is simply true that he has a fickle charactor flaw in my view, maybe caused by pressure and stress that was witnessed some yrs ago who knows? but in recent times as John Findley outlined, that sort of behavior is not in my view a worthy CV for RC captain. take the risk and he may be brilliant, but there is always a chance he may be crap or it may be too much for him.

I dont think Colin should either as he finds enough to moan about as an individual player, just imagine his stress levels as a captain of so many players

I'd be happy with ollie or Monty. Sandy just seems to lack charisma / the character needed to bring some spice to the event.

Yes, Seve had had his day. His recent illness will take along time to recover from. He needs to focus on that.


As to Lyle, I think he would do a good job. He may look quiet but he has a lot going on inside.

Herb lets face it's always a risk to a certain extent.As long as Faldo never gets near it again,now that was a guy who looked like the whole thing was too much for him.Whoever it be I bet you the captains opening speech won't be any worse than the man with the strangest sense of humour speech was!

Your right dodger it is always a risk and my clin remark was tongue in cheek, but I think Faldo (as wierd as he is perceived) did a good job in the circumstances.

I wouldnt have liked being the captain (dreams) of RC team following a winning spree that saw a good drubbing of the yanks and for it to be on US soil when the yanks were so fired up for revenge, you could see it and feel it in the build up and throughout. And yet the results reflected a brilliant effort by europe that was overshaddowed by an unbelievable display by the yanks. So I dont have the same view of Faldo as some, though he does create media interest and popularity negative or otherwise and even bad publicity has its values.

At one time I thought about Woosie for captain as it is in Wales but he's not really up to speed on whats going on week by week. I don't think Ollie will play well enough to qualify by right so he is the best choice as he has players respect and is still in the locker room regularly

I agree that Faldo is not as black as he has been painted, whether he should have another go is something else.

Ollie or Sandy, has to be Ollie for all the reasons above.

Woosie is a bit in the background of late.

There is another, who probably won't get an RC playing spot but who may make a great Captain. How about DC?

Sandy Lyle all the way. Ollie will have his turn, another deputy job to Lyle along with Torrance and you have a very experienced and capable team.

All Sandy did last year was what numerous people do week in week out in a medal, walk in. Give it a rest.
