Here we are, in mid summer, the weather is perfect(ish), the course is magnificent, the greens are fast(ish) and true, my game is presentable (for once), and there are no comps for the next 6 weeks. I have just checked the diary, and yep, it is empty.

Why?

I always find it amazing that there are no medals, comps, etc in the height of the summer at my club. The excuse is that some people go away for holidays, but so what? Why should that matter?

Baffled.

Murph you are not alone.....we have comps crammed into April,May and June then after the Club Champs at the end of June we have nothing bar a medal,a fun stableford and invitation day till September! Can never understand it as the course is not its best in April & early May then it comes into its own from June thro to Sept/Oct yet we have next to nothing on!

Baffled number 2......!

Come to my club. This week, as an example, the course is closed all day from monday to saturday for a mens open. Not much use when you're a junior though

Yep - I'm all ready to go and guess what...

Snow blindness in the club comp diary....

OR...Nothing but silly pairs/4BBB/3 club one armed challenge matches/bring your chimp to the course day and other tosh.

Gits.

I want to play 8 white tees next 8 weeks.

I mean - really? Why not chuck on an extra stableford with no prizes and no entry fee for the 20-30 that haven't gone to wretched Alicante....

:D

I find this very strange, across in england (maybe scotland and wales) you have a strange way of doing things, from my perspective anyway.
Over here Saturday is competion day, all year round, 18 hole season starts in april and runs to september, every single saturday has a competition (could be medal stroke, stroke or stableford). Through the winter season we have a reduced hole competition where it starts as 18 in october but as the course gets a little more damp it is reduced to 14,12 then 9 over christmas)
we have one main open week in August and the ladies have their own day.
Recently we have had to open the competition to Fridays and Saturdays due to sheer numbers wanting to play in it. Most folks work so mid week competitions are limited to 9 hole "hats" where the pro shop runs it, not the club and handicaps arnt affected to my knowledge.

I find it very strange that comps come a standstill mid summer. At my club we play comps throughout the year with no break whatsoever, yes you have times when they are down on numbers but this is minimal.

Dont see the reason why they should stop.

sussed it perhaps!

August - September is harvest time, hence we're into tradition territory as with clocks changing and long summer school holidays.

all you juniors pay attention - you're not supposed to be enjoying yourselves, get down on the farm!

comps on almost every weekend through the whole year at our club plus midweek medals and they've just announced medal comps to take place through the week on the par 3 course for the rest of the year as well.

shame i don't get time to play in them!

Captains day on Sunday followed by a medal on the 18th, club championship on the 1st and 2nd, stableford on the 9th medal on the 15th and the Longhurst on the bank holiday weekend (play two rounds over any of the three days). There are also a couple of midweek medals/stablefords in that period too so I think we're pretty covered comp wise.

our comittee is brilliant.
Ist weekend of the month Stableford
2nd weekend pairs better ball
3rd weekend medal
4th weekend Texas scramble.
This runs 12 months of the year.
At any other time members can play in the bogey comp.

Main comps like opens, captains day club championship are arranged for 5th weekend if there is one or the scramble takes a back seat.

Having read the posts above all I can say is a huge thanks to our competiotions committee.

It might be just me, but I hate scrambles. What is the point? It takes ages, you can't get cut, if someone hits a good shot you might as well not bother playing, and you might go all 18 holes without putting.
