Myself and 2 friends are planning a jaunt to Scotland next year. Can anyone recommend any places to go/courses to play?

Our initial thoughts are to go for 7 days, play 4 times.

The WAGS want to stay somewhere reasonably near a town/village/city with things to do and ideally we would like a round on Gleneagles...although I notice the Ryder Cup is being played there next year.

2 of us are ok, been playing for about a year and a half and knocking on the door of official handicap territory. The third member of our party is good, used to play off scratch and now plays off 2.

The North East.
Base yourselfs in Inverness which is a great base for Nairn, Castle Stuart, Tain, Dornoch, Boat of Garten and many more.
You'll find it more affordable than most of the other areas of Scotland.

I would say just outside Edinburgh.

Play Gullane, North Berwick, Musselbrough, whitekirk and you can always take the train or drive to st andrews.

Edinburgh is a great place to visit and lots of cafes, shops and restaurants for the wifes

Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice and sorry for the delay getting back to you!

I think somewhere around Edinburgh is looking the most likely. The WAGS have found some nice cottages/houses near the pub and the beach so they are happy with that :)

Play Gullane, North Berwick, Musselbrough, whitekirk and you can always take the train or drive to st andrews.

I'll take a look at those, thanks :fore:

I'd bow to local experience, but Train to St Andrews? Leuchars perhaps, but that's 5 or 6 miles away, so would probably involve a cab or 2!

And my memory of Whitekirk was that, while pleasant and a good place for a post round meal, was that it wasn't a great course for a 'first time on it' as loads of blind holes - and rather exposed. Craigielaw or Longniddry are much better imo.

Special Recommendations:

Gullane 2 and 3. Right up there in my 'best day of Golf' list
Fishers in the City (Thistle St). Superb Fish cooked simply. Steaks as 1st Class too!

I'll second Foxholer, also Dunbar is not too far away.
Gleneagles and St Andrews are not to big a drive from Edinburgh. Play the Queens or Kings at Gleneagles.
Central belt of Scotland is easy to get about.

You can easily get a train and taxi to st andrews. However I would guess the OP is driving to get around these courses.

I played whitekirk the first time this year in the open and it was fun. I do agree blind holes and a good challenge but its worth a visit.

I highly recommend Gullane 2 and 3. Fantastic courses and lovely views. Another one to look into is the Marriot Dalmahoy. It has some love grounds and the last time I played the course was in a1 condition.
