OK those of you who have read my posts will know that I have been struggling since I took up golf with making consistent clean contact with the ball.

Yesterday I played my second actual game of golf (on a par 3 course) that I shot in a pretty dreadful 84 on my first outing.

There was added pressure yesterday due to playing with two more experienced golfers, one of which plays off 10 (was as low as 4 at one point!) and is my boss(!!) So naturally my biggest fear for the last week was hitting a dreadful first shot on hole 1!

Amazingly, I hit the green on my first shot, and relaxed into the game - everything was going quite well on the front 9 - I got round in 39 as opposed to 43 the first time I played, so was pretty pleased to be thinking about finishing up in 8/9/10 under my last score.

Clearly this was a mistake because I then shot 3 x 6's in 4 holes at the start of the back 9 and ended up just one stroke under my previous score of 84! :o

However, I was very pleased because last time out, I made ZERO pars, and this time I made 4! Also, I made 8 double bogeys the first time and only 4 this time out! A couple of horror holes ruined my card really, but I think it's evidence that I am improving!

Based on this one-stroke improvement in the last two weeks of range time, I reckon by the time I'm 117 I'll be going round in less than 70 :D

Stick at it mate, you'll soon get the hang.

I go round in less than 70 quite often.................................................................. by missing 4 holes out.

For me it's just consistency off the tee at the moment, my swing just isn't there yet.

I rescued myself from awful tee shots a few times with quite reasonable putting and chipping.

My only goal really was to beat my score from last time, which I did - just a shame it wasn't by more after a good start!

One positive though, I was having a horror for a few holes and after hole 15, a friend I was playing with - who is about the same level as me and who I'd been leading the whole game - had caught me up going into the last 3 holes. It was fair to say I was having a nightmare few holes up to that point, so saw no other option than ending up losing to him. I then shot two of the final three holes in par when the pressure was really on, which felt good!

Any improvement shows you are heading in the right direction. A few bad holes are to be expected but it sounds like some good positives to take from the round.

Gradual? that seems pretty fast to me!! Well done.

I'm sure I read about some guy who (finally) made it to single figures at the age of 84 after playing for 60+ years, I'd class that as 'gradual' :p
