Three friends go out for dinner and the bill comes to £30. Each of them pays £10 to cover the bill. After they have paid the waiter realises that he has overcharged them and the bill should have been £25. As the waiter can't work out how to split the £5 change equally between three he decides to give each of the friends £1 each in change and keep £2 for himself.

Each of the friends has now paid £9 each for their meal and the waiter has kept £2. 3 x £9 = £27 + £2 = £29

Where is the missing £1?

Where is the missing £1?

what missing pound? there isnt a missing pound as far as I can see

25 for the food ,2 for the waiter and 1 each for the diners.

25 + 2 + 3 =30

Colchie for Chancellor!

Colchie for Chancellor!

With my maths skills I'd be able to get rid of the deficit in about 15 minutes. It would still be there but no one would be able to find it.

I saw the riddle online earlier and did eventually manage to work out that there wasn't a missing £ but it did take a while.

You have probably heard this, but...
A Rolls Royce pulls up outside a hotel in a struggling area of, let's say Greece.
The wealthy owner of the car walks into reception and asks to book a room. The hotel owner says that will be €100.
The wealthy man puts €100 on the desk and then has a second thought and asks to look at the room before he confirms he reservation. The hotel owner agrees and sends the man off with the bell boy to see the room.
The €100 note is sitting on the desk. The hotelier is confident the man will have the room, so he grabs the €100 and runs round to the local butcher to pay his long standing debt with apologies it has taken so long.
The butcher runs round to the farmer and pays his €100 debt.
The farmer is delighted and immediately runs round to the local call girl to pay off his €100 debt.
The call girl runs straight round to the hotel to pay for all the rooms she has used.
Just as she places the €100 note on the desk the wealthy man returns, saying he is very sorry, but he doesn't like the room and will not be staying. He picks up the €100 note and leaves.
Everyone's debts have been paid, yet no work has been done and no money has been earned.

I think that only works in Greece. Note: No one uses it to pay their tax. :)

The call girl hasn`t paid the hotel.
The wealthy man picked the money up.

Before the man went into the hotel, everyone both owed someone 100 euros and was owed 100 euros by someone else, so was effectively level, just as they were after the hotel visit.

Simple maths sum*

10+10x10 = 110

dont believe me? Try it on your phone

*doesnt work on all phones

Why are you surprised, it's the right answer. Or are you not surprised and just teasing us………… ;)

Maths doesn't work on the basis of doing the sums in the order in which they crop up, there is a hierarchical order which should be followed. Look up BODMAS.

If you were expecting an answer of 200, the correct equation is (10 + 10) x 10.

I thought in the absence of any brackets you worked from left to right though?

No, you use BODMAS

Brackets
Orders
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

Do anything inside brackets first working left to right, then calculate any ordinals, division & multiplication next then finally add & subtract the products you have obtained to get your answer. It's all here;

I can't believe that I'm that bored with daytime TV or that stir crazy that I'm giving maths advice online to grown ups………. :D

So it works like this?

Par 4......2 shots then 2x2 shot penalty then onto the green and a 3 putt equals

2+2x2+3=7

or my way....

=11? :o

Just look at the original £100 as an interest free loan. If I was waiting on work invoices to be paid and borrowed the same amount from the bank interest free it works the same way as long as the final person who is paid the amount owed is the person who owes me money then the circle is complete, I pay back the interest free loan and everyone is good.
