THe Lesson Virgin - How Did It Go Murph

Frightening. Very scary. I may yet never hit another golf ball. Ever.

We looked at last weeks video. I knew there was a reason I didn't want to.

Most of my problems (that I was happy to know I didn't have) come from having the ball too far back in my stance. This leads to all kinds of stuff, of which the end result is, it is only down to world class hand eye co-ordination i can hit the ball at all.

What I need to do is move the ball ridiculously far forwards. Stupid far, it seems.

From there, I can shank it at will. Apparently, this is kind of cold turkey, and once grasped, can only get better.

To be fair, on video, it looked a lot better, but there is still an absence of lag, which is what I actually want. This will come, I just need to practice havingth ball forward.

My 6i is now played from where I would have previously played my driver.

My coach was amazed that in trying moving the ball forwards, I only shanked two. He thought I would shank way more whilst getting used to it.

To be fair, he think this is the hardest change we have to make, and he thinks I am doing well.

Just don't put any new balls in the bag for next weekends golf.

Try putting a heap more weight on your right side and turning your shoulders flat ;)

You could also try hitting the ball in front of the divot as the club is coming back out of the ground! :)

Just kidding... best of luck with your swing.. you need it! :D

Was it worth doing though. Do you regret not getting the problems diagnosed sooner?

Flipping right I do.

I have put a load of old balls in my bag for the weekend. I am going to lose a few, that is for sure. May be with the putter too. Apparently I have to do the same set up for every shot. Chipping got ugly today.

But just think how good it'll be when it clicks into place. I'm hoping my new teaching pro will be able to produce something equally positive on Thursday

Re homer,

Yes, may be.

I am a competent 9/10 handicap. A lot of that is down to natural talent, and a hot short game. Whether I will get better through this process, who knows? It is worth a look. Whether I can go back if I does not work, again, who knows? This is make or break time.

Worried of Watford.

If your prepared to work at it Murph then you'll get the end product. Good luck.

S&T has the following pattern according to how far you work towards the back foot...

push-fade - ball center, shaft straight, weight center, hands straight
straight-push: ball back, shaft forward, weight forward, hands in
push-draw: ball back more, shaft forward more, weight forward more, hands in more
push-hook: ball back most, shaft forward most, weight forward most, hands in most

You always set up at the most extreme which would produce big (steep) hook swings and big blocks if you drop below plane and get stuck. It would also cause you to shank wedges as the club would be travelling too far in-to-out from back there.

I thought you went to the extreme to rid yourself of your bad habits?... once they were gone you're supposed to start bringing the variables back to a more neutral position and hit smaller shapes.

I wish you well on your quest and I hope the pro can find something that works well for you.... not sure anything can be done about your putting though :mad::mad:

Murph, I had the same thing when I had some lessons earlier in the year - he got me setting up with a 6 iron with the ball just off my left heel and my hand seemingly so far forward they were over my left knee...nasty.

The wierd thing was that he did some filming face on and it was not as grotesque as it felt to me - it just takes time to get used to it. I did struggle with the short game and woods with this set up and gradually drifted back to something less alien to me....but that is due to a lack of practice, or willingness to practice if i'm honest.

Stay strong and stick with it.......until you run out of balls:whoo:

Thats Murph screwed for the next 3 months then

Practice, practice practice, and if you have any spare time, practice some more

Good luck Mate

Cheers fragger.

Trouble is, I'm busy this week, then playing Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I will be raiding my stash of rubbish golf balls for sure.

The other issue is that he does not want me to try to correct anything, ball flight wise. Just hit it from this new ball position, and think about swinging through to target. I am not allowed to worry about where the ball goes.

It can, and does, go anywhere!

I had a 3 year lay off after blowing my knee out playing football. Started playing again and had lost so much consistency in my swing it was unreal. Had a lesson and I got made to do the same thing, move my ball forwards and get my hands further forward. It felt and looked horrific, until like you saw it face on and realized it actually looked like a tour pro would at address. Keep with it me old mucker you will get the benefits.

Whenever I have a lesson my pro will always point out that I have let the ball and my hands creep backwards and gets me to move both of them forward an inch or 2.

It looks and feels a bit strange initially but I think it's almost like a parralax thing. When I check my reflection in the patio doors at home the proper set up looks much more neutral than I think it will.
