I found it rather sad this morning that all the focus of the Championship play-off final was all about the money that the winning club would get rather than the chance to play in the top flight against the likes of Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd et al.

Its not quite been as bad since Norwich won but there are far too many references about the much referred to £120 million.

Is it any wonder that England's football and its players are so far behind the major nations when there is so much focus on the money?

I agree but you can't ignore how much it's worth to sides coming up. It's not just about the PL though and in every major league in Europe, the money on offer is huge these days

Very much so but is there the same financial disparity between the top flight and the second division in the other major leagues?

Sky love to dramatise every match and this is no different.

Norwich actually only get £80m due to there previous parachute payments.

Agree, nobody is playing for honours anymore just money or the chance to qualify for the next moneymaking opportunity. Where 4th place is more important than winning silverware and where the payday for promotion is far more important than the chance to test yourself against the best.

I would actually disagree with the point that finishing 4th is more important than winning silverware, we can only have 3 winners a season and what else is left, finishing 2-7 gives an extra chance of silverware the following season, The money is a bonus, a hideous bonus, to the fans it's not about the money.

I understand the the Championship is the 6th richest league in the world, so the fact it is such a big jump up financially to the Premiership does demonstrate how much silly money is out there in the English game. I don't know but I suspect the Championship is as full of foreigners as the Premiership as the wages there are still very good, and so long as it remains like that England's national side will never get to the top, unless their young players start playing for European Clubs...but they wont, they'd rather languish in the reserves of an English Club but on great money, than go and play first team football in France or Holland for lesser cash but terrific coaching/experience.

Think he's referring to chairmen of Premier League clubs who wall all to a man (or woman) prefer to finish 4th so they qualify to play Gozny Plopdam in the qualifying stages of the Champions league in July than win the FA Cup. Hell, Newcastle even prioritised just staying in the Premier League over trying to win any cup trophy this season. Not saying it's right, but that's where we are now.

"Ah, the good old days, the good old days..."

What has all the money done for the English game? If you visit most European countries you'll find a few exceptionally good teams, Barca, RM, Juve, B Munich, but what is there outside of that. the PL might not have the best team(s) in Europe but it has the best top division in terms of strength in depth. It gives quality entertainment which, in the main, is played at fantastic stadiums in comparison to what you'll find in Europe.

Do we want to go back to a mug of watery Bovril, chomping on a stale pie whilst standing in the rain and watching blood and thunder football, or do you want the best league(s) in the world?

As much as I've got fond(rose tinted) memories of going to Ayresome Park, I'll take the new version every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
