Is absolutely nuts.

Two men have had their minimum sentence for murder reduced from 24 years to 21 years as the appeal court judges thought 24 years was too severe.
These men killed their victim by binding him with duck tape, striking him on the body with an axe, a meat cleaver, a hammer, a knife and a baseball bat.
When he was dead, they put the body in a wheelie bin, took it to a secluded spot, poured petrol over it and set it on fire.
And the appeal court judges thought 24 years was too long.

They got life, and are not eligible for parole for 21yrs. In this instance I'd prefer life to mean life - it was a horrific, barbaric crime.

In this case I would prefer life to mean the hangmans noose!

I'd prefer to give them life in prison but with corporal punishment. I'm not for the death sentence, it's a cop out and if you are wrong...oops...but some mild/medium torture is fine. Maybe a daily waterboarding session thrown in there.

Don't entirely disagree, but it costs a small fortune a year to keep these people in prison - maybe just hack off a body part every day until there are no more parts left to hack!

I don't always agree with you Dave but I quite like the sound of this....

And Chris's idea too....

34K per year, that doesn't include the cost of bringing the sentence, legal costs, cost of the Crime, impact of Crime. They will like cost the tax payer around 1.5 million each for their initial sentence, add to that the appeal costs and parole hearing costs etc, closer to 2 million each

I'm all for the American Chain gang ways, especially for the neds/thugs/delinquents, tougher sentence and a tougher time IN that sentence. Bright yellow work clothes and chained and shamed together, working to clear rubbish, dig ditches, clear waste ground etc etc

My dad's always had an interesting idea for prisoner punishment.

Once a day, 2 or 3 of the deceased's family are allowed into the cell whilst the guards turn their backs.

Might not work if the prisoner was as strong / mental as Bronson, but it's not the worst idea I've ever heard.

I do not get this ? You do not agree with Hanging someone incase they are innocent but it is ok to torture them and possibly be innocent ? A society is best judged on how they treat criminals.

In that case our society has failed in my opinion. You can murder someone and be back out on the street within 6 years to continue your life. In prison you get three square meals a day and access to library, internet, phones, gym, Sky TV now in the newer prisons, tea making facilities etc etc. That is better off than some poor in our country.

The re-offending rate is astronomical so we clearly have failed with the judicial and penal system in our country.

To be honest though I think our society has also failed just as badly as the judicial system.

Surely this worst statement I have read on this forum in ages!

Think it's a paraphrase of that often misquoted erm...quote.... "Society is measured by how it treats it weakest members", attributed to many people over the years incl Churchill.

I stand by my statement that its too easy in prisons and the Chain gang would sort many out. Some 'sherrifs in some US States have some outstanding results with a zero tolerance policy. No namby pamby delay for 6 months while we compile social work reports and the scumbag is out doing it again and again and again

Some seriously illiberal comments on here. Death penalty? Torture? X-Factor? A bit OTT.

How about criminals serving the sentence they're given? If you behave well you get out after the time the court handed out, if you don't - time added on!

I would just use a multiplier on regular offenders. So, say 1 year for an offence, 2 years for re-offending, then doubling each time. There would be no multiple court appearances before the first custodial sentence and knife or gun offences would be at least double of any standard tariff for the offence. 2 years would be 2 years with bad behaviour being a reason to add to the time served rather than 50% off for good behaviour and any immigrant being automatically expelled for a prisonable offence!

Go on - shoot me down!

So they can be released and re-offend?
For certain crimes they MUST be removed from the gene pool altogether.
I don't want to pay to keep them alive and run the risk that they come out and re-offend. These people are sick and must be extinguished, for the giood of all.
Their victim doesn't get a second chance, why should they?

Slime.
